This rifle is Marked US Springfield beside an Eagle which is near the hammer. At the top of the breach it is marked US Model 1884. The stock is engraved with 13NY and has been stamped with the number 295. The barrrel is marked VPP and also has an A on it toward the breach. There is no front sight on the barrel. I would appreciate any info.
Thanks.

Sounds like you do have a Springfield 45-70 trapdoor, that may have the barrel chopped, if the front sight is missing. If you're thinking of selling it, drop me a PM, I reload for it, and been wooking a trapdoor project for some time.

Thanks guys. Helpful Info. The rifle is actually not mine but my father in law's. It has been in his family for ages. He just showed it to me. Now that I know it is a trapdoor, I have been able to find lots of info about it and learn that in fact the barrel has been shortened - it is now 18.5 inches.
Thanks again.

Pictures are worth 1000 words. With springfields, it's all about condition and originality. Both are near impossible to evaluate without seeing the arm in question.
