Can Canadians take our handguns to the US for hunting?

and depending on your Province you may need an ATT to transport to and from a border crossing
I had one of those for years in the 80's and 90's

You will need to buy the hunting license first. It, or a match invitation are required for a BATF form 6.

No issues, just follow the steps, and enjoy.

Nope.

No longer required in order to obtain approval.
'Been so for the last couple of years

but the border protection can ask and deny you the entry ...

They could also ask to see your wedding invitation if that's the reason you tell them your going to the states...

The F6NIA and the whole invitation/hhunting license think are two separate issues.

The BATFE does NOT require you to have an invitation or hunting license to approve your permit.

The USBP/DHS "may" ask to see something to support your stated reason for entering the USA.

So sure... if you're going hunting in state 'x' and say so... It's probably reasonable that the USBP would ask to see some proof... like a hunting lic from state 'x'.

But... to simply apply for a F6NIA you do not need anything.

the F6NIA has changed and you are right today you do need anymore.

So if you possess a State hunting license and obtain the form you can transport handguns to the US for hunting? Anyone done it with success? I'd hate to get to the border and my handgun be taken away.

Also can anyone buy ammo in the US?

If you have your firearm legally in the US, you can purchase ammunition for use while there. Bringing it back involves export from the US and that is an entirely different matter.
Also, be very careful when travelling through the US with the pistol that you legally brought into the US. You will be crossing jurisdictional boundaries - state lines, municipal ones - and laws vary greatly. There would be states and cities to avoid.

Jeez. Sounds like hassle.

I'm still kinda confused on this issue and while thinking about it some more, some other queries came to mind.

First of all, we have established that you can take firearms across the border for hunting purposes assuming you have a state hunting license. And the biggest draw for me in that respect would be handgun hunting, as that is not allowed in Canada.

So, a few questions.

Once you and your gun are across the border, as a non US citizen what laws (specifically handgun laws) apply to you? Obviously you can't conceal carry, but can you open carry while hunting? Let's say you are hunting with a rifle and open carry a handgun while doing so. Legal? Open carrying a handgun while hunting? Legal? Also transport regulations? Can you leave a loaded gun in your glove box like thousands of Americans do?

It's not very clear as a non US citizen which way the laws go while using your own firearms for hunting.

I'm a US citizen, not an alien but I've travelled with mono-national Canadian friends on US hunting trips.

Any non-immigrant alien in the United States who is not required to get an I-94 visa to legally enter the United States still needs to have an approved ATF form 6NIA to possess guns in the United States provided all state and local laws are followed but the old requirement to have an US state hunting license or match invitation is no longer required. That's been gone for a while.

I think some of you over think this...

They have an addiction to being mothered by the Canadian nanny state.
They gotta have their red tape, ponderous rules for everything, CFOs, c68 firearms act, ATTs, ATCs, whatever and experience acute psychological withdrawal symptoms at the very thought of true freedom.

The DeCanuck deprogramming regimen is much like weaning a baby from its mothers breast milk.

Handgun hunted in New Hampshire with one nervous Canadian from Scarborough.
I'll never forget the trip.
We both had holstered S+W model 29s (44 Mag) on the hunt.

Canuck: "Gee, are you sure we can drive around with holstered handguns on our hips?"
Me: "Yup, no problem, it's legal"
Canuck: "I don't have my black badge holster certification"
Me: "Who cares, this is the United States, not Canada."
Canuck: "Here come a coupla guys, they'll report us."
Me: "Report to who for what?, it's legal, we're hunting"
And on and on and on all day.

If I had thought he was going to be that bad I'd have brought along a roll of toilette paper, a can of baby powder and a package of flushabyes for every time he shyt his pants.
Freedom can have an allergic reaction if you're not used to it.
The mental shackles of slavery are much harder to break than steel handcuffs.

Well if you have the answers those of us who over think it because we don't want to end up in jail would like to know.

It doesn't matter... someone will always come along with some hypothetica idea to put the scare into people re travelling to the US with guns... Of course I bet these guys have never actually done it themselves.

I and many others travel to the US to shoot/hunt regularly. I dont know anyone who's been thrown in jail over it.

What I mean by "over think" is... it seems some read too much into the rules. The F6NIA is a stand alone document. All it does is authorised the temp import of your gun. BATFE doesn't want/need to know specifically why you're bringing it in as long as it's for a legal purpose.

Yes... laws differ state to state, but... excersize some common sense and you'll be fine.
Chances are noone cares you have guns with you as long as you behave.

Most of the Americans, LE included who've I've interacted with are usually more amazed that we Canadians actually "have" guns than they are worried about the legality of our possessing them in their country.

My advice... Get your F6NIA... go handgun hunting...

And the requirement for a hunting permit is no longer there? So technically there's nothing to stop target shooting either? Rent a cabin out In the middle of nowhere, get a F6NIA, take your guns with you and plink away?
