Can I buy a prohibited and have it re-barrelled with a restricted license?

That's the question in the title. I was talking to my Dad and he mentioned his 85 year old father-in-law it's looking to sell his .44 magnum (1980's S&W according to my Dad). I haven't seen it, but I know the man, and it will be pristine.

I have to assume that it's prohibited because the offers he's getting are in that price range. As we all know, the price gets lower when there are less buyers every year. I would like to take it off his hands so it doesn't get melted down when he goes. I'm hoping to figure out how to go about transferring it, if possible, before getting his hopes up. Any advice would be great.

You will not be able to take possession of it right now because it is 12(6) and you only have restricted.

However, if he agrees, you may help him get an Authorization to Transport (short term) to send it to a gunsmith for alterations. The gunsmith could put a barrel on it that is longer than 105 mm and have it re-registered to a restricted firearm before he sends it back. The gunsmith will keep the short barrel because it will be a prohibited device as soon as the firearm is re-registered as a restricted firearm.

When the gunsmith returns the firearm to your grandfather, he will be able to transfer it to you. Good Luck – wish I had a firearm that belonged to my grandfather!

Once the smith rebarrels the revolver, it wouldn't even need to be returned. It could be transferred and sent directly to you. The business could take it in as a consigned prohib.

I wish he was my grandfather... He's rich!
Thanks for the replies. Anyone have a ballpark figure on the cost of rebarrelling? I don't how much he'd want for the revolver. It could go either way. He likes me and might give me a good deal, but if his old lady finds out, she'll try and squeeze every penny out of me. (She's the reason they're rich; shrewd business sense and a cut-throat mentality). I mainly just want to keep a good revolver from bring destroyed, so I don't want to lose my shirt.

Bits of Pieces rebarreled an S&W Model 34 for me a couple of years ago, cost for that was $300. I have no idea if Barry would do a .44 Mag for that price or not. The only way to know is to ask.

That's around what expected it to be. What would be a decent price to offer if it's in as good condition as I expect?

Talk to Barry at Bits of Pieces.

Just make sure you ask him in a clear way. I sent him a message about making me a reproduction Mark 22 Hushpuppy barrel. I guess I should have just said a 5" threaded barrel because I woke up to a message in my inbox that he doesn't make suppresors for people.

If the RCMP monitor e-mails like the NSA does I just want to thank Barry for having the great eye turned my way.

If you think I'm being foolish how do you think they do it? Lots of powerful computers and key words. If they are doing that in Canada then a certain individual just got me flagged because I asked him to make me a barrel. Just because they can't use it in court doesn't mean they don't collect intelligence that way. His very clear e-mail responce to a question I did not ask no doubt got the super computers attention if it's watching.

Before you jump on me, lesson already learned. Just to say it one more time I asked him for a barrel, didn't mention supressor, silencer, can, etc.

I was wondering if you could give me an idea of the cost of haveing a copy of a S&W MK 22 Hushpuppy barrel made for my S&W Model 39

I can see how he might be a tiny bit confused, of course if that confused him I suspect "reproduction" would have left him even more confused. I'm not even a mall nija type, just thought if your going to have a 5" barrel made may as well make it look like something that exsisted historically. I'll also give him that maybe the barrel had an integral suppressor, as far as I can tell it was not a one piece unit. Regardless if he had half a brain he would have asked me to clarifly. To even assume a guy with a 12(6) handgun is unaware of the law...just plain stupid in my mind.

I've delt with Barry numerous times and never had any communication issues....

And I sent him a simple question and he sends me a message that I infered to have him build me a prohibited device. If that's not an issue I'm a little confused as to what would be one in your eyes?

Like I said, watch what you ask him. Think before you hit send because he obviously doesn't.

And let's just let this end of the thread die...

By all accounts he does excellent work. I'm just saying ask the right question. That's it, that's all.

Sorry if I ruffled any feathers.
