Im planning a pheasant hunt in Oct. and want to bring my XCR along with a .223 and 7.62 bbl. I dont want to leave it in camp and was wondering if anyone know off hand if I can have it in my truck when Im out driving to areas I plan to hunt? I know you cant use a centerfire on birds, I dont care to either but am wondering if I would get grief from a CO for having this with me?

Cheers!!

Different Provinces have different regulations. Some allow rifles to be carried during Bird Season as long as they are Cased. I would take the bolt out or put a trigger lock on it just to be safe.

Some do not. You have not said where you intend to hunt, so no one can give you a definite answer. You are going to have to check your Provinces regulations, or ask the Conservation people for an answer. They usually have a phone number on the Regulations that you can phone an get an answer to your questions. One thing though....get the name of the person who gave you the answer, the time and date of your phone call. Then record it, and keep a copy accessable within the rifle case. That way, if you run up against an over officious CO, you can quote it to him.

I suppose you could purchase a big game tag and hunt birds in an area that was open for both. In Manitoba the only cartridge restriction I'm aware of it that you can't carry a rimfire while big game hunting.

What province are you in? Theres nothing that says you can't hunt upland game with a centrefire here in AB!

That's correct. Upland birds can be hunted/shot with a single projectile. Migratory (ducks, geese, teals etc) MUST be shot with shotguns. So a headshot on a pheasant would be perfect!
