Ok mods, chill for a moment, I will discuss nothing illegal (I think  )

Anyway, I'm in the planning stages of playing dress-up with my 10/22. I'm not happy with my options to customize it, so I want to build something for it. I am leaning towards a HK G3 with wood furniture and noted that Numrich has parts for cheap. BUT, I am aware of problems of legally importing parts (could get Questar do you it dontcha know ;) ) ... but what does the prohib status of the G3's and other such variants have on importation if any? What if one had the proper papers? I don't want receivers or anything, just a few parts like furniture, flash hider, sights, and etc.

Baring that option, can I buy a parts kit and or miscl. parts in Canada despite my lack of 12.anything?

Not all parts are prohibited just because they go on a G3. As far as I know, only the reciever and select fire parts of the prohibited firearm are prohibited. This is how you can have all the parts of an AK47, minus the reciever.

Some parts are just parts. However, you'll have to comply with the U.S. export laws too. It's actually the shipper/retailer, but you'll have to get the Canadian import permit to get the U.S. export permit. Gunparts has a list of export restricted parts by rifle on their site.
On our side, the only parts that are evil are the parts you don't want. The action and unpinned mags. Mind you, I suspect a package labeled firearm parts would get some attention.

Yep, you can get whatever you want as long as it's not a reciever or select fire parts. For the most part, the biggest US importation limit you'll see is the $100 export limit.

I ordered a bunch of parts for a friend of mines TP-22 (Doesn't have a computer ) and the only thing I had to do was put in two orders. The Folks at Numerich are good people. I Got a slide, mags, firing pin and some other junk without any problems.

Why he wanted to put the money into it is beond me. To each his own I guess.

I'm interested to see how this G3 experiment goes though :D

For the body, have you thought about using a metal airsoft body? Yes, I know, boo airsoft, but it is a viable option.

I had plans to build a Ruger 10/22 MP5 clone using a metal airsoft body but I sold my .22 before it got any where.

That's a cool Idea. Are those Airsoft guns made of metal though? If they are plastic I would steer clear.

I know you can buy the bodies seperate as an add on. You have a plastic gun and want to convert it to metal, for example. I'm not sure if you can get a G3 one though.

You might try to find a deactivated G3 and hack that up, but I'm not sure about the legalities of that? Would stuffing a 1022 inside a deactivated gun count as reactivating it?

After some quick airsoft price assessment, hacking up a deact G3 would be a better option. Eliminates having to order in parts (at least some) as well.

That would not count as reactivation, it's still a Ruger underneath it all. The hard part would be making it easy to disassemble to clean, and fiding a good barrel (might have to buy aftermarket and turn it on a lathe).

Would AK47 Krinkov parts kits be allowable? Theyre cheap in the US and would be OK to modify your registered Grandfathered AK in Canada.

I would think a deact G3 would be more?

Getting any parts out of the US for what the US decides are weapons of war is not possible. I tried to get a G3 stock and was told it was an MG part, no export but for police/military.
You may be able to find vendors that don't care, but you need to search around. Import into Canada is less of a problem, although Customs often asks if you have a firearm that corresponds to the part. We often have individuals direct their parts to us instead of receiving them directly, as a result.

Good to keep in mind. There are several problems to this project, and it would probably be easier to convert it to something else but I prefer the G3 look.

-Going the G3 route would obviously be more complicated. The trigger would have to be linked somehow, and I'd certainly need enough G3 parts (the whole thing basically) that I'd need to work from a dewat.

-The Thompson route would be much easier, parts easier to come by and I could basically use the Ruger as is, just with different wood.
