Can I sand synthetic stock on Rem 597

Quick question.....is the barrel on the Remington 597 22magnum supposed to be free floating and if so, how far up the barrel should I be able to slip paper between the stock and the barrel?

It has the black synthetic stock and regular barrel.

Yes it is supposed to be floating, all the way to the receiver AFAIK. I had to sand my stock out a bit to float my barrel.
 
free floating all the way, if it's not get a dowel or a socket wrench head wrapped with sandpaper and do a little work to it.
 
thanks guys. I can't seem to put paper between the barrel and stock other than about an inch from the tip (I assume this means it isn't floating) . Looks like I'll be sanding a little when I take it apart to put in the VQ hammer.
 
So I should just take some sand paper and a dowel and sand a little of the stock????

Will this affect accuracy in a negative way, or will it most likely increase the accuracy?

Anything I should be cautious of when sanding, etc????
( all the way to the beginning of the receiver?)

It should increase accuracy.
That being said there are no guarantees. It's always possible that the pressure is affecting your rifle in a positive way. Crazier things have happened.
It should help you retain consitent accuracy. The point to free floating the barrel is to avoid changes in pressure and therefore barrel harmonics. If the barrel warms up and expands the pressure will change if it is touching the stock. Your point of impact could shift from this.
 
Just wanting to make sure here.......my gun has the black synthetic stock but it is still o.k. to go sanding, correct??

I took the stock off and it has what looks like little ribs going across the barrel chamber which appear to be what the barrel rests on, should I sand these ribs down a little so that the barrel doesn't touch them anymore? Will this just make the barrel sit lower in the stock or will it free float it?
