I will be installing a scope on my Rem 760 using a Weaver base and some sort of quick release rings (Leopold?). My question is: With the scope removed, will the Weaver base obscure my use of the factory buckhorn sight?

more expensive 'weaver'/picatinny bases like Leupold, Warne, etc have a flat top.
the cheap $5 aluminum Weaver brand weaver bases have an indent milled in the top, making a very low profile channel down the middle that may allow you to see through it.

give me a minute and ill caliper a set of Weaver bases.

the centre channel of a Weaver brand base is 0.153"
so if your sights clear that you are OK.

keep in mind that this is a Weaver brand weaver base with a channel cut down the middle. most other brands that you order online will have a flat top that will be twice as high, more like .3".

I read a review of the 7400 or 7600 on Chuckhawks.com a while back. One thing the reviewer (it wasn't Chuck) liked a lot was that he could see over the Weaver bases to use the iron sights if he ever damaged his scope on a hunt. I would assume, given the similarity, that your rifle will do the same.

well, what makes it more confusing is that there are Weaver™ brand weaver bases and dozens of other brand weaver bases like Leupold, Warne, Burris, etc.

IMO if you look for ones with the centre channel milled out like the Weaver™ bases you should be OK since the centre is very low profile.
i prefer the flat-topped steel Warne weaver bases when i can get them, but i have to admit that this is merely a matter of personal preference since ive never actually had the aluminum Weaver brand weaver bases actually fail me in any situation. also, they are dirt cheap - at around $5 for most rifles, so theyre not exactly expensive to replace.
the Warnes and Leupolds are usually $30+

Cool:cool: Thanks KC & MBP for the input and for taking the time to make the measurement. I'll check that dimension in relation to the sight tonight. I was going to go with the Weaver brand base anyway. According to the Leopold website, the only base they make for a 760 is a dove-tail base, which I do not want.
