Hello I have a question for you gun nuts.
I recently picked up a short, smooth bore barrel (24"?) with rifle sites for my mossberg 500. The muzzle is threaded to accept chokes. Can I shoot 00 buck and foster or thug slugs through it without damaging the threads??
Thanks
Tim

It has to have a choke in it or you will damage the threads.

Chokes for Mossberg guns are cheap. Go buy a IC, Mod, and full.

If you have a choke tube screwed in tight the threads should not be harmed. You can lubricate the choke tube with a high pressure grease (Never Seize) to increase the thread strength.

Lubricating the choke tubes does nothing to "increase" strength just makes them a little easier to remove.

I guess we will disagree...
High pressure grease such as Never Seize contains extremely fine particles of metal, graphite and other additives known to enhance anti seize performance. I believe this combination does increase the strength of the joint when the whole assembly is flexing from the pressure of the shot column. Possible more with very thin barrels and aftermarket very thin tubes. Probably not much difference with heavy factory barrels and tubes.

Many years ago when I first started installing thin wall tubes I am sure I had literature supporting what I have stated...

^ I will agree with this 100%. Anti seize fills up any minute air space between the threads resisting deformation of the threads, it acts like hydraulic cushioning.

anti-seize changes the vibration pattern slightly but it can't increase strength.
for all it's worth, if a fracture develops at the base of the thread, hydraulic pressure will fasten rupture at said fracture.

Should not shoot any load through a shotgun with threaded barrel with no choke installed.
You can shoot buckshot through open to full choke without issues, I recommend a modified or improved cylender choke if you just wanna "do it all" plinking choke.

What he said. Never EVER shoot a shotgun threaded for chokes without a choke installed. EVER. You will ruin the threads and prevent any choke from ever being installed again.
