I was reading the 6NIA rules and it said US government marked firearms generally could not be taken into the US. On the face of it it seems easy enough to interpret. That would mean I could not take either of my P17s into the US because they both have flaming bomb marks, right? Or is that something they would make an exception for?

from what I heard transferring firearms from Canada to the US is next to impossible. Call them and find out, there might be exceptions to a US made firearm since the p17 was originally made in the US

I don't want to transfer, just take them south for some shooting and then bring them home with me. Even that seems like something I can't do with these rifles but I'd like to be sure.

I anything, the US mfgr will hurt your chances. You are not allowed to import US-made martial arms that were sold as lend-lease. The import it you would need to prove it was not a lend-lease of foreign military assistance gun, which I doubt you can, and therefore likely cannot bring it south.

The ones that do go back to the US are gov't returns like when Greece gave it's M1's and M1903's back to the US gov't (subsequently sold through CMP).
