Hi,

I have a 1911 Commander, 9mm, single stack, with 4-1/4" bull barrel (thicker barrel without the bushing). I wonder whether I could use it in IPSC Standard Division.

I am planning to go to the Black Badge course in early April. If anybody knows whether I could use this gun, please kindly let me know.

Thanks!!

Terry

Yes you can but you should know that the 9mm is a minor calibre. That is important if you are going to shoot in standard division, unless all your shots hit the 'A' zone. Also, single action pistol cannot be used in production division. You can go ahead & use the 9mm Commander for the BB course if you want, no problems there.

Thanks.

But, what's wrong with minor calibre? Did you mean that you can miss on more shots if you are Major, and still win?

There is nothing wrong with the minor calibre. 'A' zone scores 5 points with major & minor, 'C' zone scores 4 points major, 3 minor, 'D' zone, 2 points major and 1 point minor.

For a black badge course, you should focus on having a gun that is reliable, and you know well. The BB course does not focus on a specific division or what you have on the gun.. it focuses on safety, and how you can shoot safely when under pressure (time dead lines)..

once you get that over then, figure out what division you want to shoot in, or which division best suits the equipment you have..

shooting a minor caliber (or or maccuratly a minor power factor) is more suited to production, as it's all minor in production.. in Standard there is both minor and major, however 99% shoot major in standard. Thats not to say you can't it just means you need to be more accurate then someone shooting major. (using a comparable time for the stage)

Thanks, guys.

I once read in a magazine that in the U.S., bull barrels are not allowed in single stack 1911 IPSC matches. I wonder whether we have any similar strange rules in Canada. Could anyone tell me about this?

So bull barrels are okay and allowed?

Yes...bull barrels are fine for IPSC

'Single Stack' is a provisional division in USPSA. Does not apply in Canada where we go by the international rules.

USPSA has their own rule book and their own divisions. while 99% of the rules are the same they do have the odd one that is different. i have never heard of bull barrel not being allowed in a USPSA match but perhaps in their single stack division they have added it. i have let my USPSA membership lapse so i can't go and look it up for you.

However as far as Canadian rules go, as has been previously posted, it is not a problem. for as long as the gun goes bang every time you pull the trigger and you have 4 or more magazines for it go and have fun.

Isn't Production the class which has a standard sized theoretical "box" outline that all guns must fit. Are we talking about the same 'standard'?

'Standard' and 'Modified' divisions have the 'box'. No box for Production Division....

Nothing.

I shot pd last match in minor but would have won std as well. It all depends on how you shoot.

I would go with the 9 for now and burn it into your head that you can't afford to miss.

Jim may have something to say about that

My first year of IPSC I shot a Sig P220 in 9mm. On top of that the mags only hold 9 rounds. It doesn't matter what you shoot as long as you get comfortable shooting and have fun. Wait for a while and try other guns before you decide to stay with what you have or move to something different.
