Can I use a sten mag in a Mark IV Sterling

30rd bren mags are not, there are a few mags like the bren drum that are named in the law but if that are not named as exempt then they are not exempt. I don't recall seeing Sten mags on the list of exempt mags.

sterling

Patchett designed the Sterling to accept Sten mags which work well in them. The Sterling mag can not be used in a Sten though with out modification.

If Sten mags are of a full capacity pre-ban style, does anyone know if they can be used in a sterling?

Yes they can. That was one of the considerations when the Sterling and military variants were produced, was the large amount of Sten mags still in service and available.

Of course considering what a P.O.S. Sten mags are why would you choose to induce malfunctions?

Probably the biggest reason to use them is that they are cheap and fairly common.

While there were some shortcomings with the sten mag design, I have always felt that the common complaint about them being POS was a bit much. I use dozens of them (pinned to 5 rounds) with my sterling and they function just fine.
If the flat sides were dented, they could cause the rounds to hang up, and the angle at which the rounds were introduced had to be checked if the mag was giving you a problem, but I have found no more problems with sten mags than with any other mags out there.....maybe even less. The lips were always said to be weak, but they are double thickness, so I am not sure where that comes from.

The biggest detractor to these mags is that they need a loading tool to load more than a few rounds into, but since we are restricted to 5 rounds in Canada, even that it almost a moot point.

For shooting competitions where I use the sterling, I have shortened ex-cdn army deactivated (axe or hammer dent into the center of the mags) to a 5 round capacity. This way I can get lots of them into the pocket of my combat shirt, and I am not wasting space and weight carrying around 25 rounds of unused capacity.

Sterlings And The Sten Mags

The Sten mags that have been converted to a single stack with the addition of brass or some sort of rods inside the mag to decrease the width inside the mags. They limit the mag to something like 19 rounds.
I have seen many and always wondered what they were for.

Where do you find a Lanchester magazine? ;)
IMA used to sell them. But talk about unused capacity here in Canada. That would be 45 rounds of space not being used.

I got to fire a Lanchester 4 years ago with a full capacity 50 round magazine and in full auto. Seemed like that mag would almost run forever. I had the option of shooting a silenced UZI next, but opted to put more rounds through the Lanchester. What a Rolls Royce of history.
