I'm really excited to try out skeet shooting but I'm not sure if my shotgun would be up to snuff?

How well would a Remington 870 super magnum work?

Thanks!!!

It will work just fine. Use your Improved Cylinder choke for skeet. Buy some 2-3/4" shells with shot no larger than #7-1/2 and you'll be good to do. If you are shooting at a club hearing and eye protection are usually mandatory and ask some of the skeet shooters to show you how the game is played.

If you end up with a financially crippling clay target addiction as a result please don't say you weren't warned. ;)

By all means, it'll work, just like you can race a Clydesdale. That gun isn't set up to be a fast handling gun, and you may have difficulty on the doubles. Just don't get frustrated, that's all I'm saying. But go out and enjoy it, shoot lots and let us know how you fared. As Claybuster said, be prepared for an addiction. You'll LOVE it!

I shot a full choked Model 12 for years at informal skeet. I didn't realize I was handicapped with it until someone told me. It seemed that after that I couldn't hit anything with it. The power of suggestion......

Jason,

I see you are in the Toronto area. I shoot out of Uxbridge, so pretty close to you. I started out with ...an 870 Super Magnum. I have since upgraded but occasionally will pull out the 870 and have at it.

For learning purposes, an 870 is fine. Regarding the point that you will be handicapping yourself on doubles....correct, but learn to shoot singles first.

If you are looking to "give skeet a try", call Uxbridge or Oshawa and see if you can't arrange for one of the more experienced hands give you some help.

Happy shooting,

Steve

I wouldn't worry about the handling or weight of the gun. Skeet guns tend to be heavier with more weight forward. Maybe that's why Kriehoffs are so popular and when it comes to barrel heavy nothing beats a skeet gun with full length subgauge tubes. The weight keeps the gun swinging smoothly.

It's the light quick guns that give me fits. I have a little 6lb. subguage pump gun that drives me insane when I shoot skeet with it. I'm either in front of the bird because the gun is so fast or miles behind because it stops dead because it is so light.

For a inexpensive skeet barrel, I had a 28" Rem 1100 barrel with mod choke,
and cut it to 23.5" and added a bead. It works great for skeet and sporting clays(if the shots are close). Cylinder as it is called is a bit more open than a
Remington skeet choke, as I have patterned them both. Even at the longer
skeet shots, I can get good breaks.

870's are fun skeet guns!
I sold one last year(older 870skeet model with a cutts) to a buddy becasue He needed a pump and I had this one with a shortened stock.
It was a super smooth gun and shot super as well!

You guys are awesome. Thanks for all the advise! I'm gonna give it a try next time I'm out at the range. Thanks again guys, I LOVE GUNNUTZ!!!

I have been around the skeet field a few times in the past and about 4 weeks ago I took out the old 870 rem and shot a 100 striaght. It is not the first 100 I have had with a pump thats for sure.
I just bought a Browning Model 12 high grade in 28 ga. 4 weeks ago and have shot a 98 with it already. So I don't think it is the end of the world to shoot a pump. We have a shooter that has shot a few 100 straights with a model 42 (410) his average is probably 95+ and thats not B.S.

If you are going to be in the Orillia area or just want to go for the drive send me a PM as soon as you know you are available, and I will meet you at the Orillia gun club and we will blaze some skeet targets with pumps ! Any Sunday. Im There.
Or I will travel to Oshawa Gun Club and we will hook up. I am sure there will be a member there that will sign me in and you also. I could make arrangements to have some friends there. Open invite.

See Ya on the field !
Good Shooting

I've shot skeet with this one...

Not the most appropriate but it gets the job done to a degree.....and lots of fun! An 870 with a longer barrel would be fine too.
Cheers

Definitely, an 870 can be a FUN skeet gun; I've used a "riot"-style 870 with 20" rifle-sighted barrel, and a 10-shot extension for skeet, and broke them with that better than with anything else I've tried. With an extension, and if you're not shooting for record, you can load up and go to town; from the #7 station, I've broken 8 "report doubles" in a row, where the puller just keeps hammering the button, and you have to try to keep up. Try THAT with an O/U :D

Actually many rem chokes marked skeet are actually a negative restriction and measure larger than the cylinder but Remingtons, Improved skeet has a slight restriction. Most companys have a different idea what they call skeet.

Two points : IKE how long did it take for your eye brows to grow back after the fire on your face from muzzle blast ! Well Done in deed !!!!

Point two :
My buddy bought a Browning Citori 3 weeks ago with "30 inch barrels choked full and mod. I took all the choke out with a expanding reamer and flex hone. There is zero choke in both barrels. He ran a 100 straight 2 weeks ago and I can tell you that with 1 oz loads it hits all targets on the field with authority. Very good breaks, maybe it is the longer barrels and the fact he is a very accomplished shooter. Bottom line no choke in a 12 ga. is a very competative pattern that just might get a chip off a target on not a great shot.

See Ya on the field
And Good Shooting !
