Just got back from the range withe my savage bvss. I was testing loads for groups and noticed a peculiar pattern. In a three shot group the first two touched or evelapped but the third one was high and right ( about .5 to .75 inches). This happened enough times that it is probably not coincedence. Bteween each group I would clean the gun and let it cool. Its a bit frustrating because it spoils an awesome group.

I measured each group using calipers to find the three center to center distances then averaging (hope this is the right method ) Of the six groups tested the high was .94" and the low was .37". If I could just get that third shot to hit by the first two I could of had some .1 or .2 " groups using the method described.

Conditions were windy and warm and I'll be the first to admit I'm no pro rifleman but if this can be fixed I would greatly appreciate it.

Howdy. I am not clear as to why you are cleaning your rifle between groups? After cleaning your barrel you should fire two rounds through it to "foul" the barrel, then you will be able to tell which loads are doing well (if you are testing loads). You will never get consistent groups if you are cleaning it so often! You should only need to clean your barrel during a range session when it shows signs of excessive fouling, ie. when your groups start going to hell.

When working up new loads I will clean the barrel well, then fire two rounds of whatever through it (moly if moly loads are to be tested, non-moly if non-moly loads are to be tested), then I will fire all of my test load groups without further cleaning, usually 15 to 21 rounds, pausing to let the gun cool somewhat between groups.

Hope this helps.

They don't always go into the same hole.

Did you catch a gust of wind? I shot a 5 shot group today an ddidn't pay attention to the wind. Two shots in the same hole, 2 shots in another same hole 3/4" away and one all by his lonesome. Perhaps if I'd waited for the wind to be the same each time the outcome would have been different.

Wind will bugger up good groups in no time.

Maybe fertilize those trees and grow a windbreak.:p :D

You were in town and didn't call?

Yes I missed the bingo. Prior commitments. But I have a sneakin' suspicion I would have had a blast working beside ya. I usually have a lot of fun at those bingo's.

What fundraising do you guys do? I could come up and help with a bottle drive.....:D

BTT(back to topic) The new savges usually shoot pretty well. If it is always the third shot, could it be a barrel/stock problem? After the barrel warms up?

Maybe try 5 shot groups and see if shots 3, 4, and 5 all go high. Then skip the cleaning and after cooling shoot another 5 shot string to eliminate barrel fouling as mentioned by pudelpointer. Let us know what happens.

Yup, blame Brent. We went for pizza and beer!

None. I have a sneaking suspicion that if I want anything changed or to happen at the club I'll have to take a more active role. I get enough of being in charge at work, but if you want something done right...:D

Actually, our range is pretty nice, considering we can't have a big pool of members. Have to take a page out of the YKSC handbook and sign all the Mounties, Parks, DFO and ENR guys up on the roster to get more funding from Sport North!

You may also be experiencing pressure spikes due to the hot weather. 94F here today. If you are reloading, try reducing your powder charge by half a grain. I experienced this similiar problem last year at this time, and reduced charge solved problem.

Interesting

In one of the loads I was testing the lowest was the best and did not show that trend. I guess thats what makes this hobby so addicting because you never stop learning:)
