Can someone give me the lowdown

It mainly comes down to the "practicality" of each; IDPA was invented in the US specifically for people who CCW, and the rules are built around being able to carry a handgun concealed, and how well you're able to use that handgun in self-defence if you needed to. Because of this, you have to wear clothes that conceal whatever handgun you choose to use, and you have to use approved "concealment" holsters. There are also rules that say you have to use cover/concealment whenever possible, and you lose points whenever you drop a mag with ammo in it.
IPSC originally started out with the same sort of goal in mind, but it's now basically "use whatever you want, however you want, as long as it's safe", and it usually comes down to speed. IPSC invariably has more shots fired in a typical stage (up to 32), and on that basis alone, I think it's more fun.
 
The BB course takes you through the basics of what IPSC is about, how to draw safely from a holster and aquire targets, the basic proper techniques of drawing, moving, and shooting. The rules and how to interperet them. And many other items.

The BB course is recognized across Canada, and will allow you to use a holster a almost every range. Having said that it is not a holster course. Some people are scared at the cost and say that they can take a holster elsewhere cheaper. I can guarantee you that there is no holster course that will teach you as much about shooting as the BB course.

In Alberta, you first match fee is included in the price of the course.

As many can testify, you will have a great time on your course.

I believe all IDPA leagues recognize the BB as sufficient instruction to allow you to shoot.
 
both IPSC and IDPA are fun, IPSC started with Jeff Copper around in the 70's as a training for concealed carry in the U.S. as the IPSC evolved,it becomes a sport. on the other hand some "purist" like Bill Wilson started Idpa for the purpose of training or whatever where Ipsc started. but Bill Wilson has his own agenda,he became a rich guy because of IPSC selling his aftermarket parts. Unfortunately in the 80's a lot of manufacturer started selling a better price 1911 and works better, ( StI, SVI,) just to name a few. IPSC or IDPA are fun, whatever you choose it doesnt matter, whats important is that both decipline will help you in how to shoot, reload, and most of all handle your gun safely. remember that both decipline will teach how to shoot but will not teach you how to FIGHT.so go out and have fun.
 
IDPA might end up being alittle cheaper. Try them both and see what you think
 
IDPA style shooting is supposed to imitate "real" or "pontentially real" scenarios for armed citezens. Where as, IPSC is, from my understanding, "pure sport" and therefore not based on scenario type stages. Both are great shooting sports, and I recommend shooting one or both, you will have fun! As far as cost goes, it will depend on your tastes and 'requirements'. In IDPA style sports, you are not allowed to use "race guns" or specialized holsters or mag holders, which really cuts down on potential costs. IPSC has divisions for production guns and kit too... So pick one or both and get out and shoot.

In the IDPA style (CDP- Canadian Defensive Pistol) you require the following:
-1 stock service pistol / revolver (some very minor mods like sights OK)
-3 magazines / "full moon clips"
-1 concealable type holster (recommend kydex for low cost)
-1 double / 2 single mag pouches
-FUN & SAFE ATTITUDE
you would be good to go at a CDP match

For IPSC, I believe they require 5 magazines, holster, mag pouches, and pistol/ revolver (which will dictate what divison you shoot in).
I am not an IPSC shooter, so they may chime in with different kit requirements for different parts/ divisions of the sport.

To get started, you really only need the basics. Bring a safe and fun attitude to the Black Badge (IPSC) or CDP or IDPA course and you are on your way. A good idea may be to go check out an IDPA or IPSC match and get to meet some of the guy/ gals in your area. I'd invite ya, but it'd be a bit of a drive for you:p
