Can someone please give me the Coles notes version of the differences between all the 58's and 858's out there? I see a lot of variations of this rifle being offered. VZ-58, CZ-858, CSA-858, restricted, non-restricted, etc...

If I'm not mistaken, the CSA is a new production gun with all new production commercial parts?

I would like to pick one up but I also want to get the one that is assembled with the most military parts possible and not new commercial stuff and I just don't really know what to look for... I definitely want non-restricted length. I see that some have a nice black finish, where as others have a crappier looking blue/grey paint finish.

VZ58 is the model of rifle. CZ858 is the Canadian civilian version by CZ. There are different variants and manufacturers of the vz58 model rifle.

Taken from Wiki: VZ58 Variants

vz. 58 P: Standard fixed stock.
vz. 58 V: Metal folding stock version for vehicle crew and airborne units.
vz. 58 Pi: Has a mounting interface for an infrared night vision NSP-2 sight, fixed stock, cone flash hider and folding bipod.
Automatická puška ("automatic rifle") AP-Z 67: Experimental 7.62×51mm NATO caliber version developed in 1966.
Útočná puška ("assault rifle") ÚP-Z 70: Experimental 5.56×45mm NATO version developed in 1970.
Experimentální zbraň ("experimental weapon") EZ-B: Experimental bullpup prototype developed in 1976.
Ruční kulomet ("light machine gun") codename KLEČ ("Mountain Pine"): Experimental variant with a 590 mm barrel (similar to RPK), developed in 1976.
Lehká odstřelovačská puška ("light sniper rifle") vz. 58/97: Experimental marksman rifle developed by VTÚVM Slavičín.
Samopal ("submachine gun") vz. 58/98 "Bulldog": 9×19mm Parabellum variant developed by VTÚVM Slavičín.

CZH 2003 Sport: Semi-automatic only variant for civilian consumption. Available with either a standard (390 mm) or shortened (295 mm) barrel. Limited production was made for the civilian market in Canada with an extended barrel length of (490 mm).

CZ 858 Tactical: A semi-automatic variant designed for the civilian market in Canada, assembled from unused parts from when production of the military versions ended. Available with standard (390 mm) barrel length on the restricted -4V version, or extended (482 mm) barrel length on the -2 version. The barrel is not chrome-lined in the -2 version unlike the military and -4V version. External components have a new varnish coat (identical to the coating used on original military rifles). A "Canadian" model is now also being offered based on the -2 version, featuring a real wood stock engraved with a maple leaf.

FSN Series: Newly manufactured civilian semi-automatic variants. Available in standard (FSN-01, 390 mm), with or without folding stock (FSN-01F and FSN-01W, which has a wooden stock and cheek piece), or shortened (279 mm) barrel lengths (also with folding stock), outer parts are blued. All variants with the exception of the -01W have bakelite stocks.

CSA vz. 58 Sporter: Available in .222 Remington, .223 Remington (5.56 NATO), or 7.62×39mm, these carbines were newly manufactured by Czech Small Arms, and not Česká zbrojovka. They came in Compact (190mm barrel, folding stock), Carbine (300 or 310mm barrel, folding stock), and Rifle (390 or 410mm barrel, fixed sporter stock) models. In addition there was a "Tactical" model chambered in .223 Remington, featuring a 410mm barrel, railed handguard, and collapsible buttstock. All featured synthetic handguards, although the 7.62x39mm Rifle model is available with either a synthetic or phenolic wood handguard.

Rimfire VZ 58: "Ogar 58" developed and manufactured by Highland Arms in Czech Republic, together with the cal. .22 LR conversion kit "Ogar 22). The conversion kit is intended for all calibers and variants of VZ 58.

The new production VZ 58 is a much nicer gun than the CZ 858. Its not at all inferior due to its new production parts... its just a smoother, more reliable gun. If $$ isnt an issue, its a better choice.

by what pop out on this section the CSA vz58 in .223 or 7.62x39mm see to have some quality issue on some , for the cz858 is only the gremlin generally but it can be fixed easily by welding a tab ,

I know there are reliability issues with the VZ 58 in .223... but you rarely hear of any issues with a 7.62 model. IMO, the gremlin IS a reliability issue and it does appear on many guns.

Gremlin's just an issue where a part wears or there's a slight imbalance in mass of some parts and the gun fails to recock when it cycles. Most places put a dab of weld onto the bolt carrier, elongating one of the bearing surfaces, which eliminates the problem. I've had two original 858's and never had the problem with them.

Looking to eventually buy a CZ858 and wondering what this gremlin is exactly. Did a search no result. Can someone post a link if it's been discussed?

They're are two types.

Type 1 is when the sear won't reset. Fix is to weld a tab on the bolt carrier.

Type 2 is when the trigger gets stuck in the rearward position. Fix is to shim the sear bushings with the end of a 9mm cartridge or to wrap the gap in between the sear bushing and sear with something such as a garbage bag twist tie.

Type 2 is easy to fix. Type 1 requires welding skills which not everyone is good at.

The CSA Vz 58 already have these issues fix from the factory. I just had the bolt come apart on my .223 Vz 58 but its in for warranty repair and should be good as new when it comes back. CSA have 5 years of excellent warranty service.

I've seen quite a few CZ858 broken bolts posts. Definitely not just the gremlin.

I've got a CSA VZ-58, and have put 200-300rds through it and I'm the second owner. No problems at all, but if you're not a 'I want it NOW!' kind of guy, wait for the 958, as that should have all the old Gremlins resolved and not to mention you'll be the cool kid on the block with a 958.

I don't see that many improvements with the 958 over the 858, other than the rail - but that's just me. Hopefully the gremlin has been fixed and the magwell adapter is a "drop in" mod (couldn't get a straight answer on this question). I'm under the assumption that it will need machining, like the old ones did. No chrome lined barrel... Personally, I think this rifle could have been blueprinted better with more improvements, at a slightly higher purchase price.

This is a 'teaser' photo a CGN'r created, hope that beaver barf is not on the finished product cou:

I put these photos together quickly in photoshop.

+1 for the 858...approx 2500rnds so far without a single hiccup. Would sign up for a 958 if they ever show up though.

Glad someone asked this question as I have been curious about the same. I have an 858 and love it to pei ss but I want another and just am having a hard time deciding what brand. There was some good explanation here. What about these century arms vz85s that are coming in? Any one heard any reviews?
I agent seen any csa models in any of the dealers shops, only see them now in the EE, so I take it there Are import issues?

Import issues are with the CZ858 (which will no longer be imported as of around a year ago), not CSA rifles. Not much info on Century Arms as they haven't made it to Canada yet, I think. Reviews are mixed in the US for most of CA firearms.

CSA vz58's are readily available right now:
