I don't know what you call these sights so I'll show a pic of what im talking about. theres a bunch of numbers on it... what do they mean. they go from
4-19.

I shot at a 200yd range and i nearly whent right over top the backstop using these sights and that scared me a bit so can someone please explain these damn things to me.

this is aproximatley where the sight was set when I hit the top of the backstop at 200yrds

The 4 - 19 means that the sights are graduated from 400 - 1,900 metres. If you lay the sights down, they should rest at 300 metres.

Either way, that means you're gonna have to aim a bit lower at 200 metres.

By the way, at the height that those sights are at, I'd be guessing you're aiming with them set at 600 metres. So if you're shooting at 200 metres, yeah, you're going to be way over.

Well if they are anything like a mosin nagant sight, layed down it goes up to say 1000yards(for example), past that you prop it up, and you get higher numbers. lay it down, and pull the sliding thing all the way to the rear, you should be on paper at 100yards then(if its like a mosin nagant).

It's a 7mm mauser 1896 if that makes any diffrence at all.

says MOD. MAUSER 1896. LUDW. LUEWE & C2 BERLIN on the reciever

Ok so im not actually supposed to shoot the gun with sights flipped up like that? or do u flip them up only for long range or........ im really confused.

When the sights are down, they will be graduated in lower markings, allowing you to shoot at shorter distances. I'm not 100 % sure, but I would imagine the lowest setting you'll get is 300 metres, so regardless, you'll end up having to aim a bit lower on the target to hit at 200 metres.

When the sight is flipped up, the slide moves up and down to adjust for bullet drop for long distances, in this case being the 400 - 1,900 metres you mentioned.

So, just lower the slide and drop the sights down, and you should be fine.

ok that sorta makes sense. is there markings anywhere to tell you distance when the sight is not flipped up?

also I just noticed there is a number 20 on it as well but it's almost right at the top edge of the sight so i never noticed it.

like they flip up like this:

___|___ (side view)

make it look like this:

___/-____ (side view)

the slider things adjusts how low it sits to the stock!

I can't get it stay at an angle like that. it's either flipped up verticle or layed down. I can get it to stay on angle but if you move it to much it just falls back down.

errr I think i put the / in the wrong way.

Put the marker at what range you are shooting at, then lay it flat.. the marker should stay at lets say the "400" range, and then your rear site will be raised

Ok well I tried that, but I didnt notice any diffrence at all from the 400 mark all the way up to the 2000 mark and I should be able to at least see a diffrence in that broad of range, should a i not?

lol ya im starting to get the idea that none of these guns operate on the same principles. they all seem to have their own little quirks u gotta figure out.

this frigin sight is just pissing me off cause I can't figure the damn thing out and Ive got 3 diffrent answers on what to do from people on here witch just confused me even more cause their sayingopposites of what the guy before said lol.

In theory, when the sight is stood up, the numbers are for the different long ranges. This is the correct way to use the sight for these ranges.
Lay the sight down. Is there an eyepiece when the sight is in this position? This should be the shorter range setup. It will still likely be for a range longer than 200 yards. You may need to aim a foot low. You may need a higher front sight for a 200yd. zero.

Looks like you had the sight set for about 1000 metres so it would shoot way high at 200 yd. Lay the sight down and use the notch just above the hinge pin.
BTW that rifle is probably Boer.

Just do your buddy a favour and drill and tap it for a scope:D :p

You flip it up for volley fire....setting the slide to the range you are shooting....The idea was for fixed position firing....Like trench to trench WWI type battle conditions....Flip it down with the sight slid all the was back...This is the battle sight.....should be 300 yard zero.

Russ...

Lay the sight leaf all the way down. There should be a sighting notch on it. Use that notch to shoot at close range - probably a 300 meter battle zero. You might have to aim slightly low to hit your target.
