I just received the new Can Tire sale flyer. The 6" electronic calipers are going on sale again. Reg $ 34.99 now on at $ 14.99.

Part # 58-6800-4 Page 37 of the Nov 17th to 23rd flyer.

I've had one for close to 2 years and when using it, can't notice any great difference from the more expensive ones that I've had over the years.

A few things that I consider for a device like this:

1. Readout - brightness, size, etc, to make it easy to read under most light conditions

2, Repeatability - when measuring something, do you get basically the same reading when repeating the measurement.

3. Zero - will it repeat zero when closing the caliper after a measurement.

4. The finish and the fitting of parts - does it compare favorably to other good quality measuring devices you have.

5. Battery (spare one included) - is it common and does it last (the lifespan would be impossible to asses before buying it). First battery lasted over a year - I guess this would depend on usage.

At this price, it's a great deal.

Are they any good?

I doubt that they will compare to a Mitoyo, but for keeping for reloading?

Get the discount, Lorne? :D

They seem to need to be zeroed every once in a while. I'm talking days rather than minutes/hours. As far as the readings, I have compared them to the Mitoyos at work and I can't tell any difference when measuring between the flats. I'm not quite as confident about the angled ends/points or for measuring inside dimensions. I can't say there is any problem but I just don't have the confidence there. For the money they are a great deal.

I picked mine up yesterday as well.
If you use the CT options Master Card, spend $40 or more before taxes, and you'll save $20!! :D (need a coupon)
Without the card you can still save $10.
Coupon can be found and printed here.
Coupon is only good 'till the 18th of November!!

Until recently, I worked for CTC head office as a product developer. One of my early jobs with the company was to review these calipers when the first samples were provided to us by the vendor.

I compared them to a Mitutoyo caliper that was sent out for calibration every 6 months. Deviation in any measurement I tried to take, inside, outside, depth or step, never exceeded the readability of the unit (0.001").

The only shortcoming I found was that if you lock the slide then try to use force to move it, it disorients the processor slightly and it will not give correct readings until the unit is re-zeroed. Pretty small "flaw" in an otherwise good tool.

:( dang it! I should have waited for the coupon!!! :p but for 15 bucks you can't beat the price for it.

Also it's a good brand too, Mastercraft.

I'm glad you guys told me about them. There weren't any on the shelf, and the dufus walking around told me to look in an aisle where they weren't.:(

Thankfully, a guy in automotive made some calls and grabbed me one from the back. :)

It seems they didn't feel it necessary to put out any on the floor.

I never would have known if it wasn't for you guys (that goes for a lot of deals at Can Tire.)

Cheers!
