Can you convert an sks that has a fixed mag to take detachable ones?

Duckbills are craaaaaaap. Save yourself the hastle. If you really want a detatchable mag sks, get an SKS-D. honestly, for an sks, i find the stripper cleaps much easier and convenient.

As I recall, every SKS-D started out as a regular SKS before being reworked in China to take detacheble AK-47 mags. Just get an SKS-D, and the work is already done!

Actually every SKS started out as a fixed mag and most of them weren't converted to AK-47 magazines at all. (I don't know anything about the Ds but you didn't say you had a D). The conversion is easy. You take the trigger group off the rifle, remove the fixed mag, and put the trigger group back on the rifle. Most good quality detachable mags will then clip right in. I never had any trouble with mine. Stripper clips? Sure, I've got them for loading but why on earth would you want to have to stop and reload every five rounds. Well worth the minor amount of effort.

I think he meant that instead of zipping 5 rounds back into the mag, because it's detachable you just take it out and cam in a new one, no stripper clips needed. If you ask me though, stripper clips are faster ;)

In answer to the initial question, the answer is yes. That being said, by all accounts most aftermarket detachable mags suck the runny runs out of a donkey's arsehole (that means they're not good!). I don't know first-hand, I've never used one, I just hear endless stories of stovepipes and feeding problems, so I've never bothered. I kinda like loading with stripper clips too, it's cool :D Plus, the fixed mag will operate the last shot hold-open catch. The only advantage I can think of with a detachable mag would be the ability to mount a longer scope that would normally not allow you to use stripper clips. The fact remains that you still can't use stripper clips, you have to load the mags by hand.

To make a long story boring, if you wanna waste your money on a duckbill, go right ahead (I think there's still a duckbill in the EE, ask around). If it turns out to be garbage, don't say we didn't warn you :D

Oops. Forgot. I am in the US. We can load as many rounds as we want. As far as reliability or quality, well I bought a steel 30 round mag, have fired at least 2000 rounds out of it and have never had a problem. However, if you can only load five at a time anyway, yeah, I would probably go with stripper clips.

Sometimes! ####, its rare that I like my country. As far as I'm concerned my country stops at the AB/Sask border and at the BC/AB border. No offence to the rest of you shooters out there. Just that your laws are seriously screwed up...

i have to comment on the conversion do detacheable models. Back about 12 years ago, there were 3 Chinese models that where widely availlable, 2 detacheable mag and 1 fixed mag. The main difference between the two detach models was that one came in the standard chinese military stock and one came in a beefed up, rubber buttpad, chu wood stock.
The first was to my knowledge a military D model and it's complete trigger assembly and the receivers dimensions at the trigger group attachment points are different from the second D model rifle. The trigger group and mag release lever (AK type) are unique to this military model and i don't think they were "modified" from a fixed mag version, or re-worked, they were made that way.
The second D model was refered to as the "north american Sporter" , thus the bigger more hunter sized stock. This model came with the little 5 round mags and has the exact same receiver and trigger group dimensions as the fixed mag rifle. This rifle, while it will accept a magazine larger than the 5 rounder, the mag release this model comes with will fail to securely hold a 30 round magazine while firing, the mag will drop out. This rifle was also different is barrel length, though i can't remember the exact numbers. These detach models are in fact factory reworked military fixed magazine conversions, but because of the magazine catch, are not meant to fire with military sized magazines.
A very handy gun smith type, could with the right tools, very easily convert a fixed mag sks to accept the 5 rnd sks magazine. NOT something i recommend you try yourself, unless.... you are a very handy gunsmith type hehehe :D
my 2 cents

YES IT HAS BEEN DONE!!!!!
I know people who have done it at there shop. It takes alot of time and it is not worth it, get a D modle or lern how to use strippers.

I just bought a couple 5rd duckbill mags off another member in the EE. Call me masochistic, but sometimes I just don't believe everything I hear or read, I have to experience it for myself :p I expect them to need some work in order to function properly/reliably, but I like tinkering with stuff, so I'm kinda hoping they do :D A lot of people on www.sksboards.com have had good experiences with duckbills, but the consensus is that they do need filing/bending of the feed lips in order to strip rounds without jamming and make the bolt hold-open catch work. Since every SKS is different, the feed lips must be bent and/or filed for each gun the mag is fitted to. I'll keep you posted on my duckbill experience, but as with anything I'd advise that there's only really one way to find out, and that's to do it yourself
