Do you guys know if it is legal to use 9x19 ammo for small game? I know most people will say " why would you want to? " I have a Sub2000 that is not getting enough use.. :) so i was thinking to take it with me next time i go hunting (not as a primary of course) . Just in case if occasional hare passes by while i'm in the tree stand.. The sub2000 is surprisingly accurate, and doesn't make that much noise, so it should do the job.
And if that is doable, do i have to have the mag pinned to 5..?

All provinces are different in some respects but at least in BC, there are restrictions for type and minimum pull weight of bows used for large game. For firearms you just cannot use rimfire for large game but you can use for small game. It would be fun to be able to hunt with a pistol but I don't think you can do that anywhere in Canada. It's up to the hunter to use what is sufficient and ethical. I don't imagine there is a lot of difference between provinces.

better be sure you don't use FMJ ammo in the 9mm, as most Canadian hunting regulations state against the use of any non-expanding ammo. I am not saying this for you to think fmj ammo can't be used with small game, but you may have to explain some things to any game officer that catches you in the field with FMJ ammo. (even if its your "backup" gun and you clearly have another rifle with you that is MORE appropriate for big game, that could be just a "cover story" from their point of view, and you may have to rely on the common sense of the warden who may not have any.
I guess you could drill a small teeny-tiny hole in the nose of the ammo to make a "hollowpoint"??

I've never seen any rule regarding the minimum/maximum for small game. They must assume that all hunters wish to minimize meat loss, and would only use .22 or a shotgun. Therefore , why legislate something that "should" be obvious. If you wish to use bigger, it is totally up to you.
I've actually shot 3 rabbits in my lifetime with a .30-06 or larger (headshots) because that was all I had and I was hungry. Worked out just fine for me. Made skinning a little harder as the place where I usually start to cut was no longer there........

In Ontario, you may not hunt small game with a firearm/cartridge combination that has muzzle energy greater than 400 foot pounds, or use anything larger than #2 shot, if a big game season is currently open. You may do so if you also possess the appropriate license/tag for the big game animal in season.

Check your ammunition manufacturer's website. They typically will offer a table showing a particular cartridge's muzzle energy.

Outside of a big game season you may use whatever you like, except in some counties in southern Ontario, you may not use a rifle larger than a .275. Unfortunately a 9mm is larger so you must be aware of this if you intend to use it in southern Ontario. The list of counties can be found in the reg book.

Providing...

- your location permits you to use firearms larger than a .275
- there is no big game season on
or
- there is a big game season on but you possess the appropriate license, or your load has less than 400 foot pounds of muzzle energy

....then you're set.

In Ontario, it would even be legal to hunt moose with a 9mm. It's a centre-fire cartridge after all. Ontario also has no prohibition against using FMJ ammo, so use whatever you like.

Magazines do not need to be pinned. If they are legal to own and use, you can hunt with them. Currently the only magazine restriction in place for hunting in Ontario is that shotguns be plugged to 2+1.

Hope this was helpful.

In Sask you could also hunt moose, shoot it in the guts and let it run off. Then be prohibited from using a dog to find the carcase. Curious what is legal and not!
