A friend on mine picked up this rifle and needs to id it to get a clip. All it says
on it is 303 British, it's a semi auto 303, the slide handle is round and flat with a hole in the center, theres a # on the inside of the slide. On the outside it looks like a reg. hunting rifle except for the centre site. lt's a long unit, forward of where a rear site would be, you grab each side of it press in and can adjust the height from 1-15. lt has a reg front site. All that's on the reg. paper is British with an id #. Barrel lenght says 470mm or more. l'm sorry l don't have more info or a pic, right now. He would like to get a clip for it if possible.
Any help would be great.

I can ID anything ;) (well... almost.)

And I concur with Stevo. It's a GlobeCo Mohawk in all liklihood. They used a cut-down SVT40 mag.

Basically, junk that rifle for parts. The mag you need is worth more than the abortion of a rifle you want to put it in - sorry man.

One of my shooting buddies has one. It's fairly accurate, though it has a tendency to fire in bursts.;)

These rifles are often not in good mechanical order with headspace problems and gas system issues. They were often shot with the then plentiful corrosive .303 surplus ammo. The gas system is not very easy to clean, harder than the SVT due to the way it was shortened. Therefore it might be pretty gummed up.

My buddy's rifle needs the gas turned up, but the regulator and tube that screws into the gas block are frozen solid. Hopefully we'll be able to loosen them up.

The rifle looks very clean and appears to be in good condition considering, as
a single shot it works fine and is very accurate.
Thanks

If it is only working as a single shot there is something wrong with it. You may need to adjust the gas piston until it will eject and feed properly.

the fact it has no mag to hold the second, third, fourth and fifth round is likely his problem ;)

"...A commercial conversion of the SVT-40 to .303 British..." Commercial it ain't. It was a surplus 7.62 x 54R, Russian semi-auto rifle. Globco bubba'd these rifles when 7.62 x 54R ammo was impossible to get back in the 60's or early 70's. Most of these rifles have bad headspace and are unsafe to shoot. Single shot or not.
Gunparts has original 10 round mags at $49.95US each, but you'd have to have it pinned to 5 rounds just to get it in the country. A 10 rounder is prohibited here.

There are very few SVT40 "Tokarov" magazines loose in Canada. There were probably three waves of imports: Globeco's brutalizations; an unknown number of rather well used guns; and then the recent arrival of some very nicely refinished guns from the Ukraine. Add these all up and subtract a few lost magazines, and you have a business opportunity.

A business did it for money, therefore it's a commercial conversion. Just like the PH Lee Enfields.

Globco 555, without doubt.

These things CAN be dangerous. PM me if you want an article on the problem.

Yes, they used a modified SVT-40 magazine. And a modified SVT-40 action, for that matter. You can turn up grody mags at gun shows sometimes...... got mine for $5, spent months getting the rust off it.
