An interesting read. (Stolen from Albertaoutdoorsmen forum):-

Well got really interested in the hi power pellet guns this winter. Porky's, Coyotes, foxes all succumbed to a 30 cal pellet very quickly. I started thinking about hunting Big Game with one. In Alberta, as long as you are 45 cal and up you can hunt with them. I started looking for a big bore air rifle that would work and finally found an Airforce Texan in .457 caliber. The rifle is big as it boasts a 36 inch barrel, runs at crazy pressures and pushes very heavy bullets out at amazing air gun velocities. U-tube videos really got me excited so I ordered one along with a compressor to fill it's tanks. My first impression when it arrived was this ain't your grand dad's Red Ryder!!!
Holy crap....loud. Earplug loud and the recoil will open your eyes and make your nose run LOL. I experimented with quite a few bullets finally settling on a 525 grain cast flat point sized .458 from Jet Bullets. When run at max pressures, which are 3625 psi this bullet left the muzzle at a 804 fps avg. To give you an idea check this photo of it standing beside a 177 pellet.
The shot was at a 2 year old bison cow at 34 yards, slightly quartering away. At the shot the bison lurched ahead, crow hopping about 6 times to hit the earth hard. Much to my amazement she stood back up and went stiff for a few seconds only to hit hard a second time. A very lethal hit and extremely fast death with a friggin air rifle .When we dressed her out, the slug centered the heart and went through the off shoulder and exited for a complete pass through. I had no idea this combo would offer this much penetration. It totally exceeded all expectations.
From what I have seen, it is totally a lethal weapon on big game and I would not hesitate to use this on all big game within 100 yards. I guess you can kill a bison with a air rifle!!

Very cool. And years ago I thought the video of some guy taking out a boar with a .177 PBA pellet using a Hunter Extreme air rifle was impressive.... I heard that Airforce makes a rifle that shoots .50 cal or over. It is nice to see the technological advances in air rifles compared to 20 years ago and more...

Can you turn even more people who vote against guns and hunting by stunts like this? Yes you can. No wonder the voters keep the Liberals in power.

Hello rem31.
If you are accusing me of performing some sort of 'stunts' by re-posting an article from another site to this one, then I would suggest you must lead a very sheltered life and would love to hear your definition of 'stunts'.
If you are under the impression I wrote the first-person article, then I can only suggest that your reading and comprehension skills are severely lacking.
The bison was shot and killed legally, by a person using a legal hunting weapon, in Alberta.

Obviously from this successful hunting story it's merely just another tool of harvest.
The UK has effectively banned archery hunting since about 1980 however suppressed deer rifles perfectly legal. Many US states allow handguns for hunting small and big game certainly with regulations on which handgun cartridge is suitable or not.
Some provinces allow crossbows for big game and some don't.

It's no different in this harvest method......
Think about logic. Leave emotions where they belong outside of this subject.

I am presuming it is your own bison?, not that it would matter , if it was in season.
But I want to see a picture. Gopher are about as big as I have got.
BTW, I don't worry about dumb ass liberals any more, and I am not a hunter.

Shooting living creatures to see if your chosen firearm will kill it is wrong, as judged by any human I can respect. The decision to vote for or against a pro hunting/firearm party gives the argument by anti hunters that we are a bunch of knuckle dragging neandrethals a legitimacy it does not deserve. The ethical hunter puts a bullet they know damned well will give a quick and humane kill in the vital area. To do otherwise only emboldens our enemies. Lets use our heads while we still have a way of life so dear to many of us.

Is that the same guy who has spent the last 40 years donating his time to promoting ethical hunting so his great grandkids can enjoy the same oppertunities he has?

Spears were legal until a certain a$$hole came along.

Yeah, cause people from Ontario and further East made their way to AB and then they cried and cried along with their eastern brethren and the NDP banned spear hunting. If everyone from out east left AB we could probably hunt with spears today.

This is not a Red Ryder BB gun. So let's just stick to the true facts versus emotional brick a brack. Quite obviously this specific tool of harvest was up to the task.
Your argument could have easily been copied-pasted from UK parliamentary debate to end archery hunting in that country.

If anything you are more suitable to have a seat amongst the poly group. The only knuckle dragger hereabouts are those that are somehow blinded to the truth.

This be true fer sure. Most hunters out there have a set preference to high speed, light weight small bore rifles for "shock value" on game. They have their place of course, but for folks like me that rarely shoot meat critters past 80 yds or so, the .45 cal rifles are me favorites. Big boolits of good design & hardness, driven at modest velocities will open a lot of eyes for folks when they actually use 'em.

I don't run a big bore air rifle, but most all of my powder burner .45's be loaded to speeds between 800 to 1500 fps. Never a worry for me at the ranges I shoot at. There's folks out there running 12 bore airguns that toss 1100 gr boolits at 800 fps. Those will wake up yer shoulder as ye see the buff flop over. ;)
