Can you leave right side safety off in a 1911?

Recently cleaning up my GSG 1911 and the right side safety lever just fell out(right grip off). I prefer it like this, but can I leave it off?

It appears to fit into the main safety lever with a little notch, and then pivot on the shaft, being held in place by the right side grip.

the pistol appears(snap caps) to function well with it off.

I don't like the hole, but I may tap it for a short screw.

On the GSG you can leave it off, other 1911's you can't, depends on the design of the safety.

I may either tap the hole and put in a small head screw, or put in a one sided safety but at least its ok to shoot it like this
