Can you look at an SKS gas tube without full disassembly?

I haven't fired my SKS in a while but upon inspection I can see that it remains clean and dirt-free inside the action and barrel. However, I am not sure about the gas tube - I have had problems with that before.

I would like to take a look at the gas tube, but do I need to go through the whole disassembly process? On my CZ-858, I can just pop a pin and look instantly.
 
That's all you have to do with the SKS too. Rotate the gas tube locking lever and lift it up, then pull out the piston.

Should take about 30 seconds.
 
The gas system comes apart quite similarly to the cz. There's no pin, but a rotating arm on the left side of the rear sight. Rotate it upwards until the hand guard will lift up and out, then continue rotating to release the gas piston extension (beware, on a lot of them the spring in here is under at least some compression - it will fly out if you are'nt careful).
