Can you really find a sks under 400$ anymore? Do matching numbers really matter?

You know what grinds my gears?

Me trying to find a sks and always hear people who say “Oh you can buy a used sks online for 300$“ when yet only seen one ever be posted on here and had a bunch of make shift parts.

Is there anywhere to find any under 400$?

If not,
Gotenda and firearmsoutlet seem to get best reviews.

Anyone recommend a good place to purchase one?

Id rather buy online because part of the experience is cleaning off the cosmoline.

I can remember 54 $ Mosin Nagants... but things change. I also can remember cans of Copenhagen for 1.20 $...now they are 30 $. Ford pickup; new from the showroom for 4000 $...yup. Now they are about 35, 000 $
Complaining or grousing about it makes me look like an old fart. I don't complain about my day rate at work ever.
Maybe realise that the only thing that doesn't change...is that everything changes?

You have to physically go in small shops to find them. Before Xmas, some local shops that had them for a while had 239.99$ tags on them still.

I’d pay 400$ for an unmolested/matching number SKS but not for the bottom of the barrel stuff that has been showing up at dealers recently.

I bought a VG+ condition all matching except for magazine Chinese SKS for 325$ just before Christmas. Had to wait a bit but it was the condition I wanted and I am sure it is going to do fine for what I bought it for (reliable semi-auto).

If you wait the right one will come up eventually, don’t buy the garbage in most stores for the prices they are asking, you can usually find a used one in better shape for the same price.

Prices at dealers are going up. What is important to know is that many have been abused in private hands, I have seen my share of number matching (but shot) SKS which have firing issues. Many people just did not take care of them. At least even the crappiest one from a dealer is still shooting fine, since it comes from refurb. Why has every SKS on the EE been only shot non corrosive ammo? LOL.

The fun thing about them is that you can modify to your liking for little money. IMHO the mint ones are already worth around $800, but it has been like this for years now. Cheap ones from private hands for around $300 may or may not have issues and looking at the parts supply (almost none or very high prices), you make the call if you want to buy one of those.

I really don't understand what all the negative hype is about over a FTRed SKS. If it's a shooter, so what if the numbers don't match.

The rifles were purposely designed, just like most milspec rifles, after the 1890s to have their parts be recycled into other firearms of the same type. Very expedient in the field, to strip reusable parts from a pooched, non repairable firearm and use them to put an otherwise serviceable rifle back into use.

I don't know of any nation in the world that did or does it differently.

Tolerances may not be perfect, but again, so what. They're just fine for the purpose they are intended for, which is to go bang, first time, every time, without fail, especially under stressful conditions.

I've seen and handled a lot of SKS rifles in my shooting life, well over fifty years. Some of them under stressful conditions. I've yet to see one fail to meet realistic expectations, UNLESS BUBBA GOT INTO THEM.

FTRs are part of a service rifles life and if it's done at a government approved facility, you are likely getting a rifle that's about as close to factory new as it can get.

I would be more concerned about a non FTRed, well used rifle, than a fresh FTR out of the crate, still in grease.

Some of the latest Chinese SKS rifles were well used and had never been through an FTR and it showed. I've even had a few brought in with parts broken and not the fault of the shooter. Part just badly worn or defective. One had a bunch of rust inside, all over the trigger/hammer group, which wasn't visible, until it came out of the stock.

Dealers aren't going to strip every rifle. That's why most of them provide a Caveat about these being military surplus and they aren't responsible for any issues they may have. Most will replace a defective rifle, repair it inhouse and put it back up for sale.

Thank goodness facilities like Lever Arms has or had a lot of spares.

If you're a collector, then purchase collector grade rifles. If you're a shooter, purchase the FTRs, there won't be any functional or realistic difference in performance.

If you're a shooter/collector, shooting your collectibles is contrary to what you're hoping to achieve and very quickly brings the premium price you paid, down to the level of the FTR and the only difference would be bragging rights.

I started buying them because they were inexpensive option to buy rifles to my grandkids and since i have a lot... Well never in my wildest dreams i would have thought i would be sitting on an interresting investment today. JP. A good move...

I have everything and no intention of selling. The crappy ones go into aftermarket stocks and get fired, the nice ones stay untouched, the middle of the road ones get small mods or will just stay in the safe. I actually like the Chinese ones with the dark wood stock and signs of minor use, I think many of those went to the US before the ban, amazing how people are able to refinish them. In Canada most are Russians and I just bought a new one, unissued and all numbers matching down to the gas tube, I am not a big fan of electro pencil - and many Russians are, I rather have mismatched ones. First thing you have to do with the Chinese ones is to take them apart and check for function. Many have small amounts of pitting or rust which is not visible with the stock on. Dealers are asking up to $450 for them now, bit high I think but the Chinese have more character than the Russians I think and there are fewer in Canada. Bolt/carrier group should not have rust since they are oiled but who knows what people do to them.

I bought one from a CGN sponser a couple years ago and the thing has not one matching part on it but it is prob one of the best ones I've ever had for a shooter
Like was said above if you want a collector rifle thats non reburbed and all matching your gonna pay for it

Pay $800 and you can Appreciate It!

Even an SKS has Feelings!

Cheapskates and Cheap SKS’s Matter!

There is no cosmoline on the current ones, just some oil.

There's still some chinese SKS under 300$ in different Quebec shops, but the SIAF...
