Just as the title says. I'm looking for a .308. I'd like to keep it under $800.

It will be used for target shooting only.

If you can and have the time, please explain some of the features and why they are a plus. I'm fairly new to firearms.

I've heard terms like bedding, etc and have very little knowledge on stuff like that.

Thank you

Have a look at the savage 10 TR .308 bolt action rifle......there are a few threads on it and the reviews are good. I personally do not have one, YET. I believe it is going for $669-699. A couple of the sponsors sell it. If their stock is at 1, don't buy it because I want it!

You can't go wrong with a Weatherby Vanguard. You'll hear a few different opinions here - it really comes down to what fits you best. Hopefully you can see some of the suggestions here and handle them in person before buying. Do you want heavy or light? What length barrel? Wood or synthetic stock? Make those decisions first, and see what's on the list.
But if you have to order sight unseen, well, buy a Vanguard! :D

Vanguard S2 will bring a smile in your face this rig with a Burris 3X9 rings and bases is south of 700.00... JP.

Tikka T3 VARMINT if it's for target work only.......

Savage 10TR is a good recommendation, as is an 10FCP.

To stay under 800$ you'll have to find a good used one, but they're out there.....

Sure, why not. It'll be a bit heavy at 9lb-2oz before scope, but steady for your shot....

If you're a "mobile" hunter, not likely your best choice. If you're a "sit & waiter" it'd be good.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. I'm more concerned about the actual platform and not so much if it's wood or synthetic. I'd like a heavier barrel. I know I should havery jumped on the flame stocks. Kicking myself now.

I'll check out some of the suggestions.

The last 2 I've purchased were new FN production m70 winchester Fwt's, one in 308- $670 new out the door, the other was a slightly used 7-08 , $700 to my mail box. Sold the 308 to a friend for cost and kept the 7-08 for my wife and son, when he comes of age.
I would pick the M70 over a tikka or vanguard, just personal preference........ When my son starts hunting in 12years or so, the M70 will be the same or of more value than it is today.
