I know that you cannot kill a sow with cubs, but i have a few trail cams set up over a bait pile i have got some bear standing but cannot see the junk :( (weird i know lol ) there have been no cub's on camera doesnt mean they wern't run up a tree nearby. my blind has a good view of the area but after watching for a while and not seeing a cub are you able to shoot a sow ? The regulations just say a Sow with a cub(s). Planning on calling the MNR but perhaps this has been anwsered somewhere credible.

First time bear hunter , thanks for reading!

If you can see a bears nuts you are to CLOSE !
I think all you can do is try to do the right thing .
Sorry don't know Ontario regs

There are many zones with the female and cub restriction, and a lot more with none listed. Call the MNR and ask. This is the first spring bear hunt. I am new to this too. On the pilot areas, only males could be killed.

You're wrong. Cubs and females with cubs can't be harvested. A sow with no cub or a boar are fair game.

Update. I just red the regs. You can't kill sow's accompanied by cubs... interesting.

One of the arguments used against the Spring hunts, the cubs might not be in the immediate vicinity of the sow. Alberta says no sow with cubs may be hunted. Bit of a quandary, some boars are obvious, others not so much.

Yeah its been pretty hard to get the ### ID sadly, as i have got them standing up but cant see as they didnt get the right angle :/ . There are multiple bear's and my blind is set up with a good view of the surrounding area hopefully i get a boar!

very excited as last fall i didnt even get a bear on camera... in the past 2 weeks i have over 1200 photo's of Bear(s) ive never had that much activity for deer or turkey or anything, I spooked a bear away yesterday morning when i came in sadly, it was a nice size according to the cam he hung out at the bait site all night!

BC says the same thing, no Bear 2 yrs and under, nor Bears with cubs.
Best not to pull the trigger unless one is 100%certain of the game they are hunting.
That includes the ### of the species as well.
Be sure of ones target as cubs are not always close to Mom when out foraging and playing.
Tight Groups,
Rob

If you don't see Cubs around I'd say it's pretty safe to pull the trigger. I am no bear expert or even bear hunter but I have seen plenty this time of year on backwoods fishing trips and have seen many sows with cubs and they are usually right on the heels of mom.

Shows how much they know about bear biology. If they were worried about the cubs not being with the sow, they would have focused on the fall season.

Bears are relatively easy to identify as to boar/sow........Hoyt, I'm sure you can pretty much tell at a glance as can I. The heads are very different shapes, and the only real confusion could be between a juvenile boar and a mature sow, either way not really a shooter. A mature boar will have his ears mounted out on the side of his head which will be wider and bulkier than a mature sow, whose head in relation to size will look narrow and almost dainty, with the ears more up top of the head. For those who want to see a couple obvious boars go to the Internet Bear King sticky at the top of the page and look at the boars that Ardent's client shot and the bear I shot........both are obviously boars, study the heads and you'll get the idea of what I'm trying to describe here.

You cannot shoot a Cub or Sow during the Bear Season. Any time you are going to participate in a hunt, you should always check the regulations.

The ministry has expanded and extended the two-year spring black bear season pilot for five years.
In 2016, residents and non-residents have the opportunity to hunt from May 1 to June 15 in all Wildlife Management Units with a fall black bear season (WMUs 1-19, 21-50, 53-64, 66-69, 71-76, 83, the geographic townships of Keppel and Sarawak in WMU 82A and the geographic township of Amabel in WMU 84).
The harvest of bear cubs and female bears accompanied by a cub is prohibited during the spring season.
Resident hunters who purchase a bear licence tag on or before June 15 must report their bear hunting activity and harvest by August 1, separate from their fall activity and harvest report.Non-resident hunters who purchase a bear licence tag must report their bear hunting activity and harvest to the issuer of their hunting licence validation certificate within five days following the last day of the season (June 20).
For more information on the pilot program see page 76.

You can shoot a dry sow (female bear)..... You cannot shoot a sow (female bear) that has cubs. A female bear can be shot, you just can't shoot one that has cubs with it, lots of dry sows out there and they are legal game...Pretty sure this is correct.

Greatwhite you are incorrect with your interpretation.

Sometimes you have to read the rules twice...

On a bait, Mamma may send the cubs up a tree, before approaching, boars will kill cubs, given the chance. Guess if you see swollen teats that look like they've been sucked on, better pass er up.

I will definitely check them out! i made a bait strung up on a tree and still very hard to see if i can find utters i have been trying to judge off of ears but i set up 2 cams hopefully to be able to catch any cub's in the vinicinity havent seen any yet but i know forsure there is atleast one boar, because other bears will leave and he is much larger than the others! only once i have caught 2 bears on camera but both were a good size! I am not looking for a trophy but i have seen bears i figure are a year maybe 2 at most that i would probally pass as they are small but other bear's look like "Shooters" to me!
