Unless I'm wrong twice in this thread, grain refers to the orientation of the wood fibers, while figure is about the variety of patterns resulting from different grain orientations. Women can have nicer figures than most stocks and they may prefer their grain whole or in rye whiskey.

Grain is the orientation of the fibres. You need to be able to read the grain so you know which way to feed (routers, planer, joiner, etc). Get it right and you have a nice smooth cut. Get it wrong and you chip and tear the wood.
Figure is the pretty patterns, determined by type of wood, how it grew, and how it was cut.
You can’t read grain from the pictures, but you can definitely see figure.
