i am asking because i can not use milsurp ammo at my range
just curious

7.62x39 and 7.62x51 (.308) are entirely different.
You should be able to find commercial 7.62x39 ammunition for your SKS, but it will not be cheap.

what's the rule? if a magnet sticks to it, generally it's not allowed at the range.

No, you cannot use .308 commercial loaded ammo in your SKS.
No, you cannot use .308 milsurp ammo in your sks.

yes you can use commercial 7.62x39mm in your sks.

expect to pay about $20 a box for soft point 7.62x39mm ammo.

PPU makes some, hornady does as well.

EDIT: are you talking about reloading for your sks, as in using .308 bullets?

I think he wants to load .308" dia bullets in a 7.62x39 case.

Yes you can load .308" bullets instead of .309" in your 7.62x3c brass bullets....accuracy will fall off however.

yeah thats how I read it too, not sure what the other posters were thinking  To the OP: you can use .308" bullets in an X39 bore but everyone who has tried it has found accuracy to be dismal. The effect is you get a poor seal in the bore which can lead to increased fouling and the obvious accuracy problems. Alot of places offer free shipping on cases of commerical X39, I think the cheapest is tradex with MFS 123 gr. FMJ. Works out to about 50 cents/round and the ammo is cleaner and more accurate than surplus. Still dirty for commercial but not filthy like Czech. You could also buy some bulk X39 SP bullets like berrys or V-max and a bullet puller.

OP; why not just change to a range that will let you shoot your guns????

Yea, THIS would be my solution!

That way you can use the cheap surplus ammo that was originally intended for this firearm: Combloc ball ammo!

Paying $1 per shot out of an SKS doesn't make the most sense to me...except specifically for when actually hunting. But range practice, and plinking with friends?!? Buy a surplus crate and find a range that'll let you use that ammo.
