I am looking for a light weight revolver and don't intend on shooting full blown 357 mag, but i only can find them with a 4" barrel. I looked at the alfa project but their 38 looks like the same weight and size of a 357.

Does anyone know of a Canada legal 38 or will i need to find a old smith and Wesson model 10.

I have a 64-3 that got converted from prohib' to restricted via a longer 6 inch barrel and an expertly mounted adjustable target rear sight. Outwardly it looks just like a Model 67, but straight heavy barrel, not tapered pencil barrel.

It is positively one of my most accurate centrefire revolvers @25 yards.
Only my Colt Model 3-5-7 beats it @50 yards.

When they are both adjusted for 25, it's pretty much neck and neck.

^The honest truth^

Trade-ex has (or had) some Smith and Wesson model 14 k38 target masterpieces with 6 inch barrels. Chambered in 38 special +p. They're a little rough/used but they should be decent. Patridge front sight, adjustable rear, k frame. I have one, not from there though. It is quite the revolver. mine can ring a 75 yard gong all day long with 158gr rn bullets and 3.2gr of 231.

Ruger SP 101...5 shots of .38 or .357 with a Canada legal 4.2" barrel. It's a nice little package and mine is quite accurate with 4.5gn of power pistol under a 158gn lead swc.

I second the 4.25" Model 66. Yes, it's chambered for .357, but .38s work fine in it and it is a K Frame with a half lug barrel. That's as good as you're going to get for a new gun.

As far as used guns go, you might luck out and find a nominally 4" gun that has been verified as having a barrel longer than 105mm. Model 10s with a 5" tapered barrel are likely easier to find.

Budget? And do you care what brand? What are you planning on using it for?
Most Smith 10's will be evil prohibited. A Smith 10 weighs .6 of a pound less than a Smith M66.
Most .38's are the same size and weight as a .357. The Alpha Projects are Czech made Smith copies.

There are lots that are "legal", but many of these are "prohibited".

Correct terminology is important.

Lightest one I think is the new Smith 66, as mentioned above. I love mine. It's a K frame and feels like it weighs next to nothing.

I've never held an SP101 but my Ruger GP100 (on its way to a new home) was a very sweet .38 special gun. It has a bit of heft, yes, but that adds to the stability. Next up is a 4.2" model 686, but again it's a chunky little number, though it feels good.

I thought the Alfa Proj .38 revolvers had alloy frames? That would reduce the weight over the .357 version.

Frame size is the same between 38 and 357 chamberings - either "J"or "K" or "L" or "N" (in order of size). There were some 38 Special "J" frame 5 shot revolvers produced (a couple of years ago) with a 5 inch tapered underlug barrel, they'd be the lightest, but folks who have them tend to be irrational and unwilling to sell them. A "K" frame tapered as noted will be the same weight in 357 as 38.
