Little bit of Canadian Trivia Question here....

A small carton from 25 Central Ordnance Depot Montreal.....dated September 1958....

1005.00.654.4058 SLING qty 3.

When I opened the box I expected to find No4 or FNCI slings.........NOPE.....Late M1 Garand , or early M-14 Slings.....3 brand new ones!!!

One of the US Forums identified the part number as one of the last cotton sling nomenclatures to have been assigned as follows....

" small arms sling, cotton web, NSN = 1005-00-654-4058, olive drab, part number 6544058" , last contract circa 1966
The fellow went on to say that it was the type of sling he had on his M-14....not a Nylon one.

These would not have been part of the Canadian Army Pacific Force being mobilized at the end of the war with US equipment.....It was my understanding this version of sling was Post War from the late '40's thru the '50's........These do not appear to be dated.

Was there a similar scheme being hatched during Korea for Canadian's to use US equipment if it prolonged??

Just curious why these were in our system ? Cheers Paul

The M1 sling was also used on the 3.5" rocket launcher in Cdn service.
RCAF in Europe also had M1s in the 50s.

I got to lug a 3.5 in RL around w/o the benefit of a sling.;) Funnily enough I got an M1 web sling dated 1943 out of stores in Gagetown back around 1980. Its been on an 03A3 Springfield since then.

Thanks Gents!
Now if we could only find some of those round metal containers with pickled Garands!!

Apparently they still exist in South Korea and rumour has it that a Trump decision may allow them to be repatriated to the US for sale thru the CMP. Another stain on the Trump record in the eyes of various liberals/leftists/SJWs fo sure.
