After many long months of planning, this year's Canadian Open Skeet Championships is nearly upon us.

Waterford will play host again this year. Doubles starts Friday AM July 6 with the 12ga Friday Afternoon. 20Ga starts Saturday morning followed by the first half of the 28Ga. Sunday Morning sees the completion of the 28Ga followed by the .410.

There is still some room left if you would like to shoot. PM me for details.

If you are in the Waterford area, stop in have a look around and say hello.

Brad.

Day 1 is history.

In the doubles event, Jordy Ireland is the Canadian Champion after outlasting Runner Up Brad McRae in a shootoff of 99s.

In the 12ga event, Dan Morris is the Canadian Champion defeating Runner Up Brad McRae and AA1 Reg Hooper in a shootoff of 100s.

Saturday brings the 20ga and the first half of the 28ga. If you are in the Waterford area stop in and check it out.

Brad,
I know it does not always feel good to be runner up but congratulations are in order.:D

Just curious, but which one did you let get away when you did your 99?

Sounds fun!

How many participants typically come out to NSSA/American Skeet nationals? Are the numbers strong or is it slowly dying?

I'm affraid International/Olympic Skeet appears to by dying slowly in Canada. Pretty small crowd.

Covey, Thanks. It was a High 4 in the 3rd round.

Canuk, I haven't counted the final numbers but in the neighbourhood of 65-70 shooters are here this weekend.

Sat Update.

20Ga Champion Dan Morris outlasted Runner Up Charlie Peacock, AA1 Brad McRae and B1 John Dong in a shootoff of 99s.

Half the 28ga is complete. 2nd Half finishes Sunday morning with the great equalizer .410 taking place Sunday PM.

Sunday Results.

Dan Morris had the only 100 in the 28ga to take Champ. Bill Sinnott was Runner up in a shootoff of 99s.

In the .410, Champ Bill Sinnott beat Runner Up Nick Cianciosi in a shootoff of 98s.

The weekend was definitely the Dan Morris show.

Dan won the High Overall Event shooting 396x400. Bill Sinnott was Runner up at 392.

Dan also won the High All Around with a 492x500. Brad McRae was Runner up with a 490.

Sounds like some wonderful shooting went on. Congratulations on runner up over all Brad. It takes a lot to win any single event I'm sure, but I think aggregates really show consistently high performance. Two birds out of top place is a very narrow margin and it just seems fantastic! Fred

Just for perspective what was the last place score? I know most wouldn't care but I know how I shoot just wondering how bad I'd do against the greats

Off the top of my head, I'm not sure. There are shooters of many skills and of varying experience. There were a handful of very good shooters there, but they do not make up the majority.

The most popular 'classes' were B and C. The most popular age range was 60-70.

When pressed, I tell people that when they can consistently shoot rounds of 20, that they may want to give it a try. 80 is like the Mendoza line for skeet (with no disrespect intended for those sub 80). The biggest secret in skeet is that nobody really cares what your score is. They are worried more about their own to pay too much attention to yours.

I do plan on posting all scores in the next week or so. You can check for yourself at that time.

Just go shoot, have fun. That's what I'm doing. I figure what the hell.

I see scores from various events range from 100 down to sub 70.

I shoot fairly well. I average 23s for 12ga but I use a f/m choked sxs. I'd love to play but I'm without a 20 and 28ga. Hopefully next year ill have a complete set of gauges and a loader for my 410 tubes. Thanks

I think that is the truth about all the clay sports. I know for me I am either pleased with my score or not. Not usually does not feel as good but often gives me a clue as to what I need to do to get better. In the end, it is all good and I do my best when I am not too hard on me.

Just shoot the 12ga. event and maybe doubles. All I have is a 12ga. Same boat as you, no tubes yet (saving pennies as we speak). My theory is, treat this year as a warm up. See what its like to complete, learn the rules, how competitions are run. Then next year, go all out.

Having a blast either way. I started shooting skeet at the end of March. Couldn't hit jack s***. Well, 4000+ shells later, I ran my first 25, two more since then, and scored a 98/100 in practice. That said, it could all go out the window when it gets competitive.

I might do that. I'm still trying for my 75 straight. I've shot quite a few 74s but station 5 high house has f_cked me quite hard for my 75 pin lol
I just shoot fun the fun of it but would like to go to a competition

just remember, the only person you are competing against is yourself. There's no defence in skeet shooting, so you can have no influence on your competitiors scores. I only guage my performance against my previous ones.

And I never count...one shot at a time...(almost true...i start to count when I step up to low 8 with 2 shells left :) )

I would like to give a shout out to Brad Mcrae, Steve Loveday and Steve Malcolm for their work during the Canadians while also participating in them.
Shooting in this is tiring enough. Shooting and then coming in and logging and posting scores figuring out shoot offs trying to find time to eat, that is a monumental task.
I would also like to thank the referees for their great job as well.
