I'm thinking of taking the plunge and carving a riflestock from scratch. Since this will be my first rifle project, I don't want to risk ruining an expensive walnut blank.

Can anyone recommend a source in Canada for affordable utility-grade stock blanks? American sources would also be OK as long as the total charges (shipping, taxes and handling) don't double the blank price.

What rifle are you stocking? What profile? I would say that even a suitable plain walnut blank will cost a $100.00 plus shipping. Let us know what size you need and someone might have one kicking around.

Don't carve anything. While your wood is nice and square, get on a milling machine and do the inletting. Files and rasps are more omportant to exterior stockwork than chisels.Try to get a semi-inletted blank. The other respondent is right, we need more info.

It should be obvious by now that I have more enthusiasm than knowledge...
Thank you rgg, mattimoose and blaser for the excellent advice.

The members of this forum constantly amaze me with their wealth of knowledge and willingless to help. One member went above and beyond the usual level of courtesy and volunteered to donate a stock blank to me for this project. Thank you friend, I only hope I can return the favour sometime soon.

As soon as I work out the specifics and get some time, I'll be posting some pics of my progress and asking for your continued advice. Thanks again to all.

Hubby and I shop regularly at Windsor Plywood. They import all kinds of exotic woods in thick slabs perfect for stocks. Do you have a chain store like this in Morontario?

I like Russian Birch plywood from Home Depot. I laminate it into a blank of the required dimensions and have at-er'

I'm working on a Swede Mauser stock at the moment and the ~$35 2'x4' 3/4" "handy panel" has yielded a 2" thick 4'x8" blank good for two stocks. Its a great material for learning on...

There are hundreds of small saw mill operators in Ontario who can supply you with walnut, maple, birch or a number of other suitable woods for about $5.00bd ft.
Search some of the woodworking sites for info on them.
I buy Locally and pay $4.50 bd ft for walnut, a little more for figured maple.
