FIRST EVER ʻCANADIAN SHOTGUN CHAMPIONSHIPʼ HELD IN CANADA
Calgary is once again playing host to a world-class sporting event.
The first ever combined event Canadian Shotgun Championship will be held August 29th
through 31st in the Calgary area.
Sixty competitors - men, women, and junior (the youngest of whom is twelve) - will go
head to head, pitting their skills against fellow participants in a total of ten clay target
events. Shooters from British Columbia across the country to Quebec are registered to
compete. Competitors will be firing 600 shells over the three-day event, looking for their
share of the $22,500.00 in prizes. A first prize of $5,000.00, one of the richest of its kind
in Canada, will have competitors striving for perfection with every shot.
Local businessman and dedicated clay target marksman, Doug Harvey, decided in late
2007 to create a competition that would cross disciplines and attract the shooting elite
from the Canadian clay target sporting fraternity. The Canadian Shotgun Championship
has become an event that is the first of it's kind. Over thirty sponsors have contributed
to ensure the success of the championship. Doug has committed that all profits from the
championship will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society for prostate research.
ʻI wanted to bring together the best athletes from all of the clay target shooting sports
and disciplines, and have them compete together in one combined eventʼ says organizer
Doug Harvey ʻThe skills and talents needed for each event are quite distinct, so it should
be exciting and a lot of fun to see these top shooters from across the country compete in
each otherʼs sportʼ
Two local clubs will provide the venues for the three-day event. The Calgary Firearms
Centre at Dewinton will provide the venue for the competitors to vie for first place at ATA
Trap, Olympic Trap, Olympic Skeet, American Skeet, Handicap Trap, Trap Doubles and
Five Stand. Silver Willow in Carstairs will host English Sporting Clays, FITASC, and the
Super Final.

I'm pretty curious to see how this event played out.

As an 'American Skeet' shooter, I was disappointed to see the bias towards Sporting ( including 5-stand and FITASC) and ATA Trap, while only glancing over NSSA skeet.

I'm sure this shoot would be a lot of fun, and it is something I would consider participating in (although I have no doubt I'd have my a$$ handed to me on a platter).

I did not see the final, but I heard that two fellows from Ontario placed 1 and 2. I can understand that some american skeet shooters may feel slighted, but that is what happens when some other shooting sport organizes such an event. The trap was not really ATA style. The handicap was shot from the 21 and then the 27 and the doubles were shot from the 16 and the 23. I was only there for the aheia part and from what I saw, it was one very long day. It would have been brutal if they had to add a 20, 28 and .410 event to the skeet. Other than some equipment problems with the trench, and no toilet facilities for the first couple hours, the events seemed well run. Now all, we need is for NZClaybuster to post the results.

:) Well the East brought home the bacon! :dancingbanana: Mat Vianello (Toronto) was HOA with 497. Jan Kulhay (Ontario) was RU with 495. Josh Day was 3rd at 489.

I should have the whole story with a pic or two and an interview or two, in the next edition of ClayshootingUSA.

Best regards,
Henry;)

Thanks Henry,
I just checked and the detailed results are on the Alberta Sporting Clays web site. Looks like Matt Vianello had a great super final come from behind win.

Sorry for the format, but I am not allowed to post attachements.
What an event. Olympic trap did not allow any squad through smooth. I did my best, but moving parts wear out and break, and software is , well soft. For those wanting to see more ATA trap, please feel free to volunteer to be on the board for next year's competition. It has been suggested that Elie Zariffe from the Montreal Club will be hosting. I am sure he will accept any and all volunteers. We did.
A big thanks to Donn Holmes, our G.O.D. General operations director. He did more unseen work than anyone, with scheduling, scoring, combining rules and such to make the event work. Doug Harvey, whose brainchild this event was, deserves the credit. He got it going, and kept it growing. George Squires brought in some fantastic sponsorship, that kept everything on track.
Val with the scoring, auction, and ???? everthing that was almost finished, Val Carter stepped in to help. Beth Harvey with the organizing of the meals. Both the AHIEA club and Silverwillow for the use of the facilities. AND ALL THE VOLUNTEERS!!!! Thanks a bunch. It was a pleasure to have had a hand in this event.

t I hit and that Oothers did not, I shoot for fun! I don't have to prove anything. Been there-done that! "It is better to be lucky, than good and unlucky". I tied for HOA last weekend, had a good runner up in the March Madness shoot in Sandanona, shot the only perfect Parcour by a Canadian and highest FITASC score in an International FITASC shoot at the Belgium. But, they were good days!!!!!!!!

I would rather have hit the shot that other's did not as a memory. Just like my mediocre shooting at the Pan Am in Northbrook this spring where I cleanned two stands where other Master shooters dropped a few! Even if my score was nothing to write about, the ones that I hit and others did not, makes it all whorthwhile!

I seriously doubt that the Eastern version can come any way close to the Original Western version of Canadian Shotgun Championship. The club in question from what I have heard, does not have the entries nor the machines for a 80 gun field. The West was smart in having several clubs joinning in the endevour! Also, the West has had much more experience with a large group of shooters in the various disciplines.

"Just the facts" Please have someone provide other information that would enlighten or dispell the above.

Regards,
Henry;)

Henry you are right about one thing! the west did a good job in spite of a few mechanical problems and loss of plumbing for a few hours. The plumbing was no big deal. Most came to shoot! Not s**t! Henry, I think you should put a shot of break free in your old beretta and beat the best on at least one station?
