Hey!

My Pedersoli 1874 Sharps Billy Dixon in 45-70 is coming in the next few weeks. Can't wait to try it out - so, I guess that means I better get started on making some rounds for it :)

I have the dies, brass, powder and lube cookies. I would love to start casting bullets, but that is not in the cards.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a Canadian source for lubed 530gr .459" postells based on the Lyman mould #457125. If not, I found them at Mt. Baldy Bullets for $33/100. Has anyone tried to ship cast bullets up from the US? Am I in for a huge duty charge?

Thanks!

Canadian supplier....

Yes, Ben Hunchak in Port Perry, Ontario casts a great variety of bullets. He lists seven bullets suitable for your purpose running from 340 grains to a 545 gn. and a whopping 590 grainer which is paper patched. I will let him quote prices. He is very competetive with his pricing and is a precision shooter as well. His latest addition is a .458" bullet from a Paul Jones mould. I believe he will supply sized and lubed or otherwise according to your needs. His business is "M.T.Chambers Supply". All sizes from .258 to .512"..........his e-mail address is <benhunchak@interhop.net> Ben is retiring and is moving to Saskatchewan the first of June so those people in Canada's mid-west are lucky indeed. I have been pleased with his bullets and the results on the range.

I have seen them available from the bullet barn but have never ordered any yet. Just do a search for bullet barn and you should be able to find them. They are in BC.

Folks: Some calls to me regarding bullets lead me to this site....very interesting
and yes I can supply quality cast bullets for BPCR and also heavy weight hard cast bullets for large and dangerous game in the .44/.444/.45/70/.450Marlin/Alaskan....most are hand cast 1 at a time and to the customers specs. There may be a short interval where I will be moving to Sask.and not able to provide service but will start up again in Early June. Two things to remember: Shipping charges for heavy cast bullets are almost as costly as the bullets themselves, also people new to Black powder cartridge are well advised to not buy bullets lubed with petrol based lubes, as this will add to their fouling/accuracy woes. Proper lubricant for black powder bullets works to keep fouling soft so you can go on shooting accurately without cleaning between shots, use of a blow tube to "huff" down the barrel between shots is the half of the equation(moist air softens fowling)

You can get almost anything you want for BPCR at Buffalo Arms.

SPG lube is good, and I'm about to try out the Sagebrush lube which is supposedly better for our climate.
When you get your Ped you'll want to find the max OAL for the bullet that your using.
To do this close the breach and put a cleaning rod down the bore until it reaches the breach block.

Tape the spot right at the end of the barre.
Next drop a bullet into the throat and hold it there with another piece of dowel, and do the same thing with the rod.
Now measure the distance between the tape starting at the barrel side.
The measurement will be the max OAL for that bullet only.
Now you have a place to start.
You want to start charging cases at a low charge, and work your way up.
Your groups will tell you the load your rifle likes.
Your groups will get smaller, then larger.
Use the charge that produces the smallest groups, and be honest about it.
It really works well.
I started out with 4" groups at 100 yards, but now I get under 1.5" groups all of the time.
I've even gotten a few under 1" using Goex Cartridge grade black powder.
These guns were made for black powder, and thats what they shoot best with.

You're welcome Freddy.
