These are blue painted steel stands that Cdn. Tire sells. Knocked down in a cardboard box. Sort of thing you'd put under a portable table saw. Regular price is $39.95. Don't bother unless you really need something like this in a hurry. Sometimes they are on sale for $19.95. A better buy. Bought some. Last fall they had them at $9.95. Scooped up a batch of them. I've put them under my belt and strip sanders, a small lathe, my drill press, and three work benches. My loading bench is 8' long, with three of the stands under it. One workbench top is fairly heavy steel, the other two are built up wood. 2x6s or 2x8s lengthwise, with 2' long 2 by pieces screwed down crosswise, this covered with screwed down chipboard, then a layer of composition floor covering for my loading bench, a layer of oak flooring leftovers on the one workbench. Thick sturdy tops, made from leftovers and scraps. Watch for these CT stands on sale. They are extremely useful and versatile. Just don't pay $39.95.

Hello,

These are a good deal when on sale. I bought one of these, but I don't think that it's sturdy enough for my drill press. I have a bench-top drill press (now sitting on the floor ) The stand instructions says the max weight capacity is 200 lbs. The drill press weighs 178 (without a new 1 hp motor that I'm putting on and without the 6" vice. )So, could I buy another kit and just double-up the thickness of the steel

My drill press is lighter than that - I could JUST pick it up and place it alone. I don't know why the legs couldn't be doubled. I'd overlap the doubled area where the height is adjustable, put the short piece at the top. Also, if the feet were bolted to a base of 3/4" plywood, it would stiffen them up a lot. Bolting in a piece of ply on the shelf level also stiffens them up. These things aren't really heavy duty; your drill press and vice are going to go at least 250 lbs, a stand welded up from 1/4"x2" angle iron would be a better idea; or a heavy wood base. I built a solid bench using bolted 4x4 timbers for my heavy vice (6", over 150 lbs). Do my barrel work on this bench.
