Hi Folks!
I was talking to Flashman and he suggested I try to post some pics of a topic I had in the General Discussion Forum. This is my first time trying to post pics so be patient with me if this does not work!
The pictures attached are of my collection of history of LCol. Thain MacDowell. I tried to put together as respectful a presentation as I could.
The pieces were given to me by my father in law who was LCol. MacDowell's nephew. He was an impressive collector (some would call pack rat!) that knew the importance of family history.
Being a VC winner, LCol. MacDowell was able to bring back more than the usual soldier. There is a machine gun he captured at the University of Toronto. He also brought back an extensive collection of rifles that unfortunately are no longer in the family. He had a Ross, a Vetterli, a Mauser, a Lee Metford and some Sniders. Unfortunately the pistols are deactivated as they were in bad shape and I did not have my PAL at the time I received them.
As I mentioned in my original post I started some research on the Canadian Military records website and they are doing some impressive work (finally tax dollars put to good use!!). They are scanning and posting WW1 personnel records and hope to have it completed by 2015. I was able to access LCol. MacDowell's entire file (116 pages!!) So if you are looking for some of your family history, check it out!
