I have a newb question for all you IPSC veterans. I have the Canik tp9sa - single action only with a decocker that leaves a dead trigger. Quarter inch press check will re-engage the striker. Is this pistol approved for IPSC and if so which division? Searched around and couldn't find anything definitive. Thanks.

Specifically not approved for production division.

Looks like it would fit in "the Box", so you can shoot it in Standard and of course, you could always shoot it in Open.
The TP9SA would be severely outgunned in either of those divisions, though. You'd just be shooting for fun. (Which is OK too.)

Thanks for the quick response. So standard and open are full of high end race guns? BTW what happened to the sentiment that the most limiting factor is the shooter themselves, not the pistol used?LOL.

Because most of the guys in standard and open division will have plenty of time behind their pistols, and once you are up against a bunch of skilled guys, the pistol becomes a bigger factor then it would be otherwise.

just a bit of info on the Canik....first came TP9, then TP9SA (such as the one questioned here), then finally TP9SFV2...........the TP9SFV2 is the DA/SA Striker Fired version and is up for IPSC Production approval for 2017

Just looked at the production division list (via the wayback machine here: https://web.archive.org/web/20180812150130/http://www.ipsc.org/rules/proddiv.php because the IPSC site is offline) and saw something strange:

CANIK Mkek series (Standard, Light, Compact), Piranha series (F, C, CF), Shark series C, Shark series FC, Stingray C, Dolphin, SFC-100, TP9V2, TP40V2, P120 (except SAO version).

TP9DA, TP9SA, TP9SA Mod. 2, TP9SF, TP9SF Elite, TP9SF Elite-S

NOT APPROVED: TP9SA, TP9SFx,

So the TP9SA is both approved and not approved?

If it ever was approved for Production, you'd need to watch the trigger pull. Read some reviews. I've seen many reports of new guns being tested near or under 5lbs. It would suck to go to a big IPSC match where they check your trigger and it fails the 5lb test.

Out of the box my trigger weighed 4.2 pounds. FWIW

Shoot a plastic gun well in Minor Standard and you can still be at or near the top in many club competitions.

I mentioned this contradiction on the website to the IPSC production committee last week and they have since corrected the list.

CANIK
Approved:
Mkek series (Standard, Light, Compact), Piranha series (F, C, CF), Shark series C, Shark series FC, Stingray C, Dolphin, SFC-100, TP9V2, TP40V2, P120 (except SAO version). TP9DA, TP9SA, TP9SA Mod. 2, TP9SF, TP9SF Elite, TP9SF Elite-S
NOT APPROVED: TP9SFx,

So the TP9SA is definitely OK as of now so long as you can pass the trigger pull test for 5lbs at the match.

I'm glad you got a response. I questioned it months ago and got nothing. I since added a M&P 9L.
