Cannon regs...?

Ok, This is what I have found: (I'll try not to make this too long)
A homemade cannon falls under the definition of a Firearm under sec 2 of the Criminal Code of Canada ("a barrelled weapon from which any shot, bullet or other projectile can be discharged and that is capable of causing serious bodily injury or death to a person, and includes any frame or receiver of such a barrelled weapon and anything that can be adapted for use as a firearm")
now, under the FIREARMS REFERENCE TABLES, a homemade cannon described as a single shot having 2212mm barrel 2 1/2" percussion calibre, fired from a 209 percussion cap ignition system, features may include a bronze or steel barrel, two wheel carriage, system of elevation, breech plug, has an FRT# 126426-1 and is NON-restricted.....so falls under the same regs as all other non-restricted firearms, just keep the barrel length as a non restricted, non explosive/incindiary ammo, etc. Now classifying as an antique due to ignition systems may be different and nothing is mentioned in my literature and that call would be up to the Chief Firearms Officer through the CFC for your area, but like I say why not call it unreg and get the reg cert and then you'll have all the proper paper you need....just in case.
Oddly enough when digging in the frt's I found that an RPG-7 IS NON-RESTRICTED.....the explosive ammo is just prohib under many different laws, but a training round on the other hand is not explosive, so no problem.....u just cant carry it into a bank or the supermarket or somethin thats all....found that interesting

I will use the info, but not as a quote.
I think the best way is to do up a set of blue-prints (as I've done before) and send them into the CFR folks for determination, along with a nice little letter.

Yeah that sounds good to me, The FRT just lists the info I gave as one of their examples. The Homamade cannon could be like the ruger 10/22 and have many variants. The CFC just does not have alot of examples to go by at this point, so they just list one. You can make up pretty much anything you want, just keep it in the normal realm of the non-restricted firearm....sounds like alot of fun and a good project, please post pics and results when you get completed.
Oh and one nice thing is since you are the manufacturer, you can give it its own make,model, s/n if you choose to do so. I've seen guys have a lot of fun with this and use badge #'s, birthdays, other important personnal dates and letters for these numbers, etc.
Another thing to keep in mind when it comes to classification, don't give them a reason to call it restricted or prohib....this goes especially for others reading this thread and thinkinig of their own designs....most prohibs are modern military automatic, semi auto, assault rifles, or look like such.....this is where officer discretion will come into play for the verifying of the firearm...if it looks like something that most of the public would be scared of and will go running to the hills screaming, then it will probably get that restricted or even prohib status....
As for the above info, some is fact by the current information that I have, and some is my personnal interpretation of the law. Laws and regulations change, so if this thread is read in 2 years from now, things may be different.....in the end make it safe, make it legal, make it able to be locked and rendered inoperabale by a locking device for transport and storage, etc and all should be fine....(has to be done for possible legal CYA hahaha)

That is only true if you have a $1000 manufacturer's license, otherwise a home made gun is simply listed as home made with a different FRT number for each one. I speak from personal experience on that one.

The RPG7 are probably the practice kits that use 7.62 x 39 rounds firing thru a dummy round that acts as a barrel. (love to get my hands on one of those just for the novelty)
There is also one board member whom sucessfully registered a 76.2mm main gun off a Sherman tank as a non-restrited rifle that I know of.

The cannon shoot at Rendezvous has been canceled for at least this year. It has been canceled due to the fact we cannot get an Insurance Co. to cover it. The Executive of the Heffley Creek Gun Club having looked into the matter has decided. If it cannot be insured it can’t happen on the Heffley Creek Range. Apparently it is all right to fire a cannon as long as there is no projectile in the barrel, but once you put some form of projectile down the barrel all insurance is off. This is unfortunate as a lot of us enjoyed this event. However if an accident were to happen the legal repercussions could be horrendous. This is a chance we are not prepared to take.

You are right, but you are also wrong.
In Canada, anything thought to be a weapon, "is" a weapon for CCoC usage.
You can be charged with firearms offences if you use the old "finger in the pocket" 'stickup' routine.

Very true....any firearm or imitation thereof when used in a criminal offence falls under the same laws as an actual functioning firearm.
