Hey folks, I know there's a huge listing of posts on the 700 5R, but I haven't seen anything on this comparison, appologies if it's been asked before but I must have missed it. Seems to me the only differences are in the barrel and finish. I have the option of either for basically the same price, but don't know what would be the best choice. Any opinions would be great..

That review isn't 100% accurate, however. It says you will get a tight chamber with the 5r. That may have been the case for the author, but from what I've seen every 5r out now has the standard rem chamber (2.955"-ish).

5R or 700p? Either or, can't go wrong. I have both, both have shoot equally well for me.

I'd go for the cheaper of the two because they have an equal chance of being equally accurate

I agree as both are still mass produced hammer forged factory barrels. The 5R has different rifling and likely would clean easier but as far as accuracy goes, flip a coin in my opinion.

Actually, I'd go for the 700p, cheaper and also because it probably has the old-style remington trigger. Not a fan of the xmark.

quattro93 - top right is a search function - this topic has come up about three times the last month or so you may be able to find a fair a bit of info.

Think there are one or two more differences:
Stainless (v. black tacticool)
Jewelled bolt
Different barrel length 24 (v. 26 or 20)
Different rate of twist 11.25 (v. 12)

See the stock is the same (thought that the P used the Hoque with pillars but apparently not).

BC Guy - I spoke with Remington after receiving an X-Mark on a base SPS last year which surprised me - the X-Mark is the replacement for the old style and are all out of the old style...

I know, but with a 5r he's pretty much guaranteed to get an xmark, with a 700p he may get an older one that's been in Canada for a while -even more likely now that they're apparently not exporting them anymore.

....Hu, not a fan of the XMARK, you'd rather have a heavy 9.lbs trigger pull compaired to the awsome XMARK with lighter factory pull and higher quality parts/construction.......OOO kkkkkkkk

Remington 700 Police if you want a ###y high-end tactical rifle...5R if you want a stainless flashy sporting precision rifle.

I guess this didn't occur to you, but you get a trigger job done. 40bucks with the smith of your choice. You can keep your 'awsome' (sic) xmark.

Umm,....OK.

Well I like the old trigger because once you adjust it (does ANYBODY use the factory settiing on their precision rig? Why?) it stays where you set it.

Not quite the case with an XFART...

MO, YMMV,

I have no problem with either trigger and I have the xmark on my SPS varmint. It's perfectly fine and keeps its adjustment fine, but for a guy that uses 1.5 ounce Jewels in competition, I find ALL factory triggers to be too heavy.

To me its like arguing which is better the Pontiac Astro or the Chevy Vega.

I'd also like to point out that you can get a 5R for the same price or lower than a P model if you look around. They are not necessarily more expensive. They're availability wasn't as consistent so the price would fluctuate but right now we have a fair number on the market. You can find one for $1000 if you look.

I just went threw this tough decision too. 5R or 700P. Both have advatages, especially stainless being a bit easier to clean and maintain. 700P for the longer barrel.

I went with the 700 Police. Never looked back. I don't think you'd be disapointed in either rifle.
