Cant decide between Remington or Savage!

If you are serious about precision you WILL eventually replace the factory barrel with an after market one.

There are some fine shooting factory guns out there (from both Rem and Sav) but nothing compares to a hand lapped barrel made by a reputable company. The Savage system here has an advantage in that you can buy a pre-fit barrel and install it yourself, the Remington system will need a gunsmith (and a lathe) to install a new barrel. All the rest, trigger, bedding and load development will be the same regardless of the brand.

For myself it would come down to whether or not you want to rebarrel it yourself or not.

I guess the one thing that I didn't make clear in my post is that the Remington only comes with a 1:9 twist in .223 while the Savage 12 F/TR is a 1:7. Out of the box and throwing on a scope the Savage would have the advantage being able to shoot 80 and 90 gr bullets at long range. The Remington would only be able to shoot 69-75 gr bullets. 80 gr .223 SMK's are = to 155 gr .308 bullets (actually the 80's are a little better) the 90 gr bullets would be on par with 175 gr bullets out of a .308.

Without doing any upgrades to either a Remington or a Savage, the Savage has the advantage because of a faster twist barrel.

I had a Rem 700 sps tactical aac-sd, sold it and got a Savage 10TR. Garbage stock, heavy trigger and that floorplate magazine...

The Rem700 Vs 10TR in stock unmodified versions couldnt deliver what the TR did. Unless you plan on keeping only the action and barrel of the 700 and change evrything else, go with the Savage fcp-sr and dont look back. Accutrigger is nice enough to work with, most likely you'll have accustock (way better than Hogue).

ive looked at the savage 10TR.. ive noticed that the bolt release is on the bottom in front of the trigger guard... did you have problems finding aftermarket stocks?
it wont be right away but i do plan on changing out the factory stock regardless of what i choose

again thanks everyone for all the input... really am thankful.... and on that note, HAPPY THANKSGIVING CGN!

Not sure about bolt release on 10 tr but I think there is a way to convert to top release bolt. I have a model 12 with the mdt hs3 chassis.

From what I have researched the bottom bolt release savage models are a huge pain when trying to find an aftermarket stock.

Where can a person pick up one of these actions?

*WARNING* Anyone debating about buying a Remington should look at the video posted regarding the trigger recall! It was shocking and disturbing that Remington has known that the trigger design has a flaw that allows for accidental discharge and that deaths have resulted from this. Watch the video and at the end it mentions which models are affected. It was only some rifles and no shotguns that have the flawed trigger. You can look it up on Google.

Irunguns should be able to get you one or you could try Epps as well. They are available in different configurations, right bolt right port (like pictured), right bolt left port and dual port right bolt, right load left eject.

Having just gone through this debate myself I can add a bit of insight here. I bought a Remington 700 sps varmint in 308 in February last year to get into long range shooting. I decided to buy that particular gun because if I only ever got one one rifle I wanted one that can do it all. I shot it a bunch this summer and had OK results but nothing to write home about. It was also pretty expensive to shoot because I didn't reload. I caught the fever and bought a savage fcp-k in 223 this fall. I wish I would have bought that first because it is cheaper to shoot and much easier to learn the fundamentals of long range shooting with a softer kicking calibre. In addition you are not going to be shooting much past 300 yards while learning which the 223 is plenty capable. I found the savage is also a better investment as you can adjust trigger a etc with factory rifle. My suggestion would be buy the savage in 223.

And for how much?

That too.

I did a quick search on the net and a guy found one down the states for 400, so I was thinking if I could pick one up for maybe 550ish up here. Im about to order a new barrel for my 243 but now Im thinking of changing to a different cal. Too many options out there nowadays. heh
