I'm flipping back and forth between picking up a G22 RTF2 and a G22 Gen 4. I can't make up my mind, so some input would be appreciated.

My situation is a little different than the past "Gen 3 vs Gen 4" debate as I have a couple of conflicting requirements. I intend to use a .40-9mm conversion barrel part time, which from most accounts operates better with the Gen 3. However I also intend to run a TLR1, which has been known to cause problems on the Gen 3 .40. I don't want to give up the light or the conversion barrel, hence, my dilemma.

Gen 3 pro's
Cheaper
No problems with conversion barrel
Proven reliability (in stock form, TLR notwithstanding)

Gen 3 cons
TLR1 may cause problems
Doesn't have the nice extras of the gen 4 (extra mag, backstraps, extended releases)

Gen 4 pro's
Extras. back straps are nice in theory, but I haven't held one in my (large) hands and the larger releases are nice (but I can swap that on the Gen 3 for a couple of dollars anyhow)
No light issues with the TLR1

Gen 4 cons
Has had some growing pains, but it seems to be reliable now though I still hear problems of brass getting thrown in your face
Conversion barrel may be more problematic than the gen 3
More expensive

I guess what it really boils down to is...

How likely am I to have problems with the TLR1 on the Gen 3?
How much larger is the Gen 4 with the large backstrap installed? By that I mean which fits better in a large hand?
How likely am I to encounter problems with the conversion barrel in the Gen 4?

I hate the word "run" but you can "use" a light with no problem whatsoever on an RTF Gen3. I have lots and lots of rounds down range with one mounted and no failures. (It does get lame cleaning it and once you know it works, you'll likely leave it in the safe anyway. Not to mention limiting holster choices, etc..) I would not see that aspect as a deal breaker at all.

You are definitely on the right track with the RTF version, though. Of my many Glocks, it is my favorite. Gen4 is ok but if only one it would be a Gen3 RTF.
 
Some of the RTF2's have the "fish gill" serrations in the slide, which were since discontinued. Others have the standard serrations. The RTF2 was very late in production of the gen 3, so any changes made throughout the span of that generation would have been installed in the RTF2.

Otherwise, I believe that they are identical.
 
My first was an RTF the second was a standard gen3. I like the RTF. The frame grips the hand like velcro.
I had a chance to try the grip on the standard gen3 and gen4 when I bought the second. I took the gen3 frame. The gen4 didn't feel that much better that I would chance buying it. I thought that the gen3 had more proven reliability built in.
 
IMO there are NO CONS about Gen 3, The RTF which is one hell of nice gun if you can find one. I do however hate the fish gill (Gen3.5) and bought two gen 3 G17's
