I'm trying to decide on another .22 semi-auto. I already have a 10/22, so that's out. I was debating on modifying my Ruger (new barrell, stock etc.) but decided that I would prefer to have another rifle to bring to the range instead.

After considering price and 25 round mag availability I came to either a Mossberg 702 Plinkster or a Remington 597. I'm not overly interested in getting the "Tactical" or "VTR" model of either one, and I already have a scope waiting to be mounted.

So when it comes to the "base" model of each of these, what your thoughts? Anything I should know about either of them before committing? Thanks for your time.

I have a 597...bought it 'cause I wanted some guns that were younger than me!

I love it...it came with 2xfactory 10rd mags and, 2xhi-caps... Accurate and, a "newer" design than most .22's (I adore my 64's but, play fair...they weren't revolutionary 60 years ago....). Reliable, accurate and, affordable.

...I won't own a 10/22! Something to keep an eye on are the hi-caps for Marlins.

Haha, my 10/22 is staying in the safe........for now.

I went with the 597. I got the rifle (with a mounted scope) and a 30 round mag for $260 (free shipping) before tax.

I can't wait to get it!

My 597 is a hoot. Upgrade the hammer and extractor though so you don't have to start cursing at your gun later! 30 round mag is a pain to load and I can empty it in about 6 or 7 seconds if I'm just fooling around.
My 597 was quite accurate right out of the box too.
Good cheap fun!
