I want a new rifle, one that doesn't cost too much or too much to shoot.
Looks like my 2 main choices are the

CZ858 non restricted or the Norinco M4.
Both are 700 bucks but as we all know the ammo for the CZ is plentiful and much cheaper. Personally I prefer the M4 for looks but the ammo $$$.

What do you guys think? The CZ I can take to the bush and shoot anywhere which is a plus. The M4 I can only use at the range and will shoot far less due to cost, but it has the coolness factor in my view and accessories galore.

Advice, opinions....

the answer is obvious, get both

The only thing in my mind that is going for the M4 is the 10 rounder mags.

If someone made 10 rounder pistol mags for the 858, that would be t*ts.

What are your plans for your gun? Do you have a spot in your area to gos hoot that isn't a range? Do you want to take it fishing/hunting/camping? Do you plan on using this as an entry into the semi auto rifle category then replace it in a year or 2?

Answers to those questions would help, but I've shot the CZ858 and was unimpressed. I found it VERY similar to my SKS (similar, not the same, yes I know there's a difference) and I feel the CZ858 is NOT worth the extra cash. But that's my opinion. So if you want a cheap non-restricted rifle, buy an SKS. If you want the cool factor and can live with the restricted status go with the M4.

M4 if it is a range only gun.
858 if you need non-restricted and don't mind the 2 hr cleanup each time you take it out. You scope options on the 858 are limited too unless you spend big bucks for mounts and such.
Personally I just scrapped the 858 and traded it for the M4 as I was putting too mch money into it trying to make it an M4.

Lol yep! My SKS is way too tacticool for it's own good right now!

since we're restricted to 5 rounds anyway, unless you get them special lar mags,i don't see any advantage of the cz over the sks- unless you count mag changes- i DO SEE a BIG DIFFERENCE IN PRICE- i'd go sks, then m4, then cz-

If you're OK with a CFO-approved range only rifle, then get the Norinco M4. If you want something that shoots cheap surplus ammo at the local gravel pit or gopher field, get the 858.

If you really want to go cheap, buy an SKS, put a Tapco or ATI stock on it, and shoot the hell out of it at the local gravel pit. (BTW, I have a Colt AR-15 HBAR Sporter and an SKS with the Tapco stock. Guess which one gets shot more??)

If I were you I'd go with the CZ because of the price of ammo. The non-restricted status is only a deal maker/breaker if you actually use the rifle outside of ranges or for hunting. I don't have anywhere else to shoot other then at the range so really, restricted or not its gonna get shot at a CFO approved location. Although the CZ can be used for hunting there are many other rifles that are better suited for that purpose, 7.62x39 is not the ideal cartridge.

If you can afford .223 then go towards the Norinco M4, you can pimp it out, use some 10 round pistol mags. I like the idea of having 10 rounds in my mag, but when SHTF and zombies roam the streets you can't unpin 10 round mags...but in reality its because you can't rest the gun on the mag with out having to couple two of them with the special plate. But you end up resting your rifle on the second mags feed lips and putting dust covers to save the lips adds an extra step in the reloading process it kills the momentum.

Some have suggested getting an SKS and pimping it out with a bunch of aftermarket parts and accessories. But once you've tapcof**ked it you end up with something that wished was a CZ. But you're still stuck with a heavy and unbalanced rifle. The CZ is light and as accurate as 7.62x39 will allow it to be. You save nothing in the long run if you pimp it out.

If it takes you 2 hours to clean your rifle you have some issues. I usually clean my VZ in half an hour while watching some action flick.

believe it or not, he's right , UNLESS YOU'RE USING CORROSIVE AMMO- we were allowed only 20 minutes for the m14 before inspection- and that was the WHITE GLOVE THINGEE- after you got used to it, you were allowed only 10- it's the hot water and windex thing that takes the time

Exactly. It only takes 10 minutes to clean any rifle and you don't HAVE to do it every time you shoot it. With the corrosive Czech surplus that everybody uses you have no choice. If you don't clean it thoroughly after every every trip to the range you got problems. And I can't do it it my living room watching an action flick without staining everything black with the tar that come out of the barrel afterwards. A good cleaning of the barrel can't be done without a couple dozen patches, multiple brushings and even leaving the barrel to soak in hopes over-night.

Anyways, my point is the corrosive stuff is a pain in the butt afterwards, yes cheap, but I would rather load a pile of non-corrosive 223 over the winter and shoot most of the summer without worrying that if I don't clean this rifle right away I will have a rust bucket. /rant off

I should also add that I think the CZ-858 is the best thing this country has seen since the feds cracked down on gun owners. Its relativly cheap, its non-restricted, its fun and it can be fun to shoot. There is nothing stopping a guy from relaoding for it either. It is cheaper to shoot the loaded CZ srplus than even relaods would be as 762x39 brass is expensive and not easy to find, the dies can be too. Not to mention .310 ammo is almost 2x .224 ammo and it has a higher pwder charge as well. So a guy could reload IF he absolutly wanted that gun and didn't want to shoot corrosive.
Personally, like I said I spend a lot of money try to get mine to preform like an AR-15 so I should just do that. I usually shoot at the range anyways so for now I am ok with the ATT BS.

Thanks for all the input guys, you know your stuff it's good to hear real world thoughts from people who have spent hours cleaning the CZ and or payed more for the M4 Ammo.
I do like shooting in the bush or the gravel pit but it's true I don't get out there very often. SO in that sense I would go M4. I think the main thing for my decision is going to be how much I will shoot it.
I think right now I'm leaning Norinco's way.. I do prefer to shoot pistol at the range, rifle shooting at paper targets does get pretty old fast however I have the 10/22 to take to the pit and shoot all day for 20 bucks.
Maybe I should just base my decision on which would better kill zombies.. :)
