Went to the range today to zero the new toy. Didn't go so well.

My setup:
.308 with a 20 MOA picatinny rail
Larue Tactical 1.5" high mounts
Nightforce Benchrest 12-42x56

25 yard target
Looked through the bore and aligned the scope. The scope was looking down below the plywood. Adjusted it up as far as it would go. Took a shot and the point of impact was still 1.5" high. I'm out of elevation adjustment.

100 yard target
Moved over just to see what would happen. Now the point of impact is just over 10" high.

200 yard target
20" high

Looks like I'm off by around 10 MOA. Am I missing something? I'm extremely confused as to why this is happening.

Is the base backwards? If not take the scope off and rings off gun switch rings around make sure tighten screws evenly from one to the next a small amount on each one then bore sight. Good luck

Base came attached from the factory. Canted down from back to front.
The rings are interchangeable front to back, there is no difference. I even called the manufacturer to confirm that. I'm desperate so I will try and change them around just to see.

I had somewhat similar issue with two bases. I had to buy longer base to accomodate the scope and it turned out to be thinner/thicker (cannot recall now) than the other one. They were supposed to be same thickness. I bought a new complete set and replaced the other ones. Worked perfectly from there.

Something is way off...

Do you have a set of spare rings, maybe a cheapo set of weaver bases? If you don't, welcome to the portion known as the "odds and ends" box. :D

Seriously, you should more than enough elevation with that Nightforce.

What would moving the rings closer together do? The base top is flat and the rings are the same height. It should not matter where the rings are placed. Anyway there are 3 slots on the front of the picatinny rail and I'm using the middle one now.

I'm going to call Nightforce tomorrow and Larue Tactical (ring manufacturer) to see if they have anything to add.

This doesn't make sense.
You adjusted it up as far as it would go, POI is 1.5" high, and you are out of elevation adjustment. You state the POI is high at 100 and 200 as well.

Shouldn't you adjust down, to get zeroed at these ranges?

Tiriaq If he moves the horizontal hair up poi goes down. If its cranked up he should be hitting low. 51t souldnt a Moa base be canted lower at the rear risin up to the front? Swap the rings and with the gun unloaded bore sight it on the furthest wall you can in your house. It should be fairly close after doing this. Good luck

It sounds to me that you are adjusting your scope the wrong direction. When you say that you were looking under your target and you adjusted it up,your aim is to adjust where the bullet impact will be,so want the impact to go down. The base should be lower at the front.

It sounds to me that you are adjusting your scope the wrong direction.[...]

Agreed.

51t, is your elevation knob in the fully "unscrewed" direction (when viewed from above, it won't turn counterclockwise any more)? That's the "full up" position.

If your elevation is in the fully "screwed in" direction (turned all the way clockwise, viewed from above), this is the "full down" position. I have a sneaking suspicion that this is the case - in which case, all is fine and as expected.

Assuming the latter, what has happened is that the combination of factors you have has resulted in a bit too much overall "downslope" in your system. Perhaps the most notable "weakness" of the NF BR scopes is that their elevation adjustment range is quite modest (40 MOA total).

The only wrinkle seems to be that you can't get quite "down" far enough to shoot 100 or 200 (and you'll still probably be a bit too high at 300). If this is strictly a medium (500 & 600) and long range rifle (900y and 1000y+), that's a feature not a bug.

A couple of questions:

Do you need/want to be able to shoot your bullets to point of aim at short range (100 and 300)?

What bullet are you using, what is its muzzle velocity? (I am thinking relatively light and fast - that's the only way I am making sense of you being 10 MOA high at both 100y and 200y).
