Hey all I read on the forum a post saying that some scopes cannot be imported without a permit....

What if a buddy sent one up as a gift? That still not ok?

Only okay if he doesn't get caught.

Hard to believe something so simple is so difficult to obtain....Do you know where the issue is? Is it on the US side and them doing all the export paperwork etc? Or is it our side trying to get it across and us doing all the paperwork. I have imported things before from the US and China and doing the whole customs thing etc.

It's actually not import that requires all the paperwork but export. Canada could pretty care less providing they get their GST and any applicable taxes.

So Im wondering would a buddy be able to fill out the paperwork from down there to export....or are we talking a extreme amount of paperwork that would require a lawyer skill set?

Is there a difference between buying new or buying used from the US? Am I allowed to buy this scope used and have it sent up? I was reading on another forum some guy said that was ok...

From what I gather a business/Retailer/FFL holders can not export optics without the proper permits. Items with a NSN number (items used and stocked by the US Military) can not be exported, period.

Personal sales are an other matter. It's up to the seller in the U.S. if he is willing to risk it. The repercussions vary if "caught". I have heard different stories from American forums. Some guys get a stern talking to, and some get a small fine. But it's dependant on what they just exported. A used basic hunting scope, not a problem. Something "tactical" or military (vintage or modern) will raise red flags.

It is more than just "optics". I tried to order some #6 x 40tpi x 1/4" scope mount screws from Brownells - no way - they can not send them to us - part of a "firearm sighting system" - I call them machine screws, but then, that is just me - what would I know.... As stated above, this is not Canada - this is US Homeland Security making sure that they are not supplying the rest of us with the means to cause them grief....

But yet we can get bullets/casing/powder from them, I know it will never makes sense. I guess its not suppose to.

Individuals also require the proper permits to export controlled items out of the USA, not just businesses.
