The spacing of the rings is not written in stone.
You do not need maximum spacing on the rings, in fact both rings can be mounted on the same side of the turrets.
Since I did not see what you are trying to achieve, either moving your eye closer to the eye piece or further away.
What does the manufacturer say the eye relief is?
Having installed scopes with the customer demonstrating his hold, many time the eye was so close the picture was near "Blacking out".
Perhaps demonstrating where you want to be in relation to your eyepiece with an observer critiquing the distance based on the manufacturer's recommendation is the solution.
