Hi to eveybody here since I am new to the forums. Before getting my first firearm, I have read quite a few threads. Thought how can one go wrong with a rimfire + rimfire scope? Then I am in trouble. :( The Savage Mark II G and Bushell Rimfire 3-9 X 32mm (come with 3/8" dovetail mounting rings) I ordered from Cabelas arrived yesterday. I found my Mark II G is drilled and tapped, but there is no grooves on the receiver. I read a lot of old threads here and Rimfire Central, most articles are about how to fit a weaver style base to Mark II. As a noob, I am in total darkness and very frustrated now. I don't think going to a gunsmith would justify the price of my scope. Please give suggestion for my problem. Thanks...

Well you could save the setup for a rimfire with a groove dovetail.
Or you could toss the rings, get a set of bases, which I figured would come with, must have open sights...And get rings to fit.. Should be able to get a set of weaver rings for Cheap...
Hope this helps, but you know its good to check all this stuff out first;)

Don't despair. The solution is easy and will work better than those cheap dovetail rings on your scope.

1. Buy a pair of Weaver (or weaver-type) bases that have holes drilled to fit the holes in your Savage. You could probably get these bases from Savage, but your local gunshop will have them. They cost maybe $8 or $9.

2. Buy a set of decent rings made for weaver bases. A reasonable choice for that scope would be B-Square Sport Utilities, medium height, 1" ring. These will set you back $25 or less and are widely available. I bought a pair once from P&D, one of our sponsors.

3. Screw the bases in, attach B-Squares (or whatever you decide to get), remove the factory dovetail rings from the scope and mount it in the new rings.

Apart from providing a more solid mount, this base/ring combination will work fine if you decide to later replace the scope. (Although if you were to go to a new scope with a much bigger objective lens housing you might need to get higher rings too.)

Thanx a lot for the info. I went to the range with my new Mark II G today, and it shoots pretty well with the iron sight. I can hit 6"X6" target at 50 yards consistantly. I had a lot of fun. Guess I may save the setup for a rimfire with a groove dovetail.

Too bad you didn't find the review I wrote here about the Mark II "G" where I commented on Savage switching from grooved receivers to tapped ones instead on the new guns! Luckily I got to hold my Savage and look it over before purchasing.

I got two Weaver Base mounts for $5 each, just remember to ask your local gunstore as the weaver base numbers they give you in the manual are NOT the right ones. The guy at the gun store told me about this before I bought my gun and bases. We took out the ones they said in the manual and they worked but not a flush fit to the receiver then he grabbed another set and they fit perfectly.

I feel your pain!

A while back, they were cut for the 3/8" dovetail rings, like mine. Ironically, I need the weaver base to mount a red dot, of which all current rifles should be drilled and tapped for that type of mount.

Which is the reason Savage now has all tapped receivers on their new guns :D

You ended up with a bonus...the Weaver style bases are way better than grooved any day. Won't cost you much to get bases and rings for your scope. I used to have a Mk II GL and it was a great shooter just like all of my Savages.

I was considering the price of a drill/tap/lap scope-mounting set.

Effen' ridiculous (over $200 with taxes), especially considering Wheelen's makes their stuff in China.

So, do you have any plans for those rings? I kinda need those... :D

Now I know Weaver style bases >> grooved. I will try to get some help from local gunsmith soon. Thanks for the suggestions.

Firemachine69, I wanna keep those rings for a while since I just start shooting sports. Not so sure what I need in the future. I am thinking about building Semi/Scope & HB/Scope combos as well. :D

Oh look what you did now, getting all addicted to that cheap ammo. :D

Glad to hear you're enjoying it!

(PS - I had a pair of the very same rings (I had purchased doubles), but for my life CANNOT remember where I placed them!)

<EDIT>

FOUND THEM!!!

I had placed them in the case with my very first rifle, a Savage 93-GL.

Yeah these rifles are VERY accurate! Before I got a scope mounted onto mine I took it out and with the iron sights I was shooting pencils although it was only at 30 yards but it was a blast.
