Can't remove my rail off my Savage?

Am I doing something wrong here?

I have a savage model 11 Trophy hunter, and want to install a vortex scope that I have kicking around onto it (3-12 x 42 IIRC). Time fit the scope of need to install a 1 piece rail and remove the two smaller rails as the bell of the sscope starts to get larger sooner (if that makes any sense).

I'll be damned if I can get the Allen head cap screws out of the existing 2 smaller rails. I've removed the action from the stock, used heat, nothing short of drilling them seems to work. Am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance.

Lots of folks have had problems trying to remove the factory scope mounts. You can try spraying liquid wrench and let it sit for a few hours. How much heat did you apply? Was it with a heatgun or torch?

Edit: Just be careful not to strip or snap the screw head off. Does Savage use red Loctite or some gorilla assembling them? If so, you need approx 550° F of localized heat to break down red loctite.

Here is what you do...

Get the gun secured fairly well.

Insert a screw driver bit of the right size into the screw , get a hammer and flat chisel if your aim is bad.

Give that bastard a good rap or two on the end of the bit, don't be scared, it will come loose now.Works every time.

I've had good luck breaking free stubborn bolts by heating them with a very hot soldering iron. Just hold the iron on the screw for a minute or two, then try loosening it.

I'd use the combination of the two ideas here.

Didn't beat on them, but used a decent amount to of heat from a torch on them.

I'll try the hammer technique. I'm a heavy duty mechanic, this little wee stuff scares me ;) worse comes to worse I'll drill the heads off, pull the rail, then cut slots in them or vice grips them.

I'm just glad it's not just me tags having the issues!

Had a few salvages with factory mounted scopes. A few were loose when I got them but if they were not just turned them out with a screw driver no problems. I just did this on my 11 in october/november

As other have said use heat, a soldering torch direct on the screw let that sucker get good and hot, when you think its hot enough wait a bit longer. Then give it a good smack or two with the screw diver and hammer. its probably red loc-tight and this should break it free. Just don't miss with the hammer and hit it good.
