A friend and I picked up some new Chinese SKS's on Saturday and once we got 'em back to his place I broke mine down to show him how it all came apart - problem was, when we tried it with his we couldnt get the gas tube off.

I rotated the little lever, and normally the gas tube and cover will come off easily - his doesnt even move. It's almost like it's got something jammed into the gas cylinder or something.

Anyone seen this before? The rifle is still covered in the cosmoline and has never been fired. My thought is that if some part of the gas system is a bit out of place, firing it would cycle everything properly and the gun would be fine after that. My only hesitation is that I don't normally hear people say "Guns broke? Well just fire a few rounds through it and you'll be fine!".

Thoughts?

Dak.

Just a though, did you lift the lever too far ? If you did then chances are the gas piston extention and spring is probably pushing on the end of the tube and jams it in place.

its against my better judgement to fire any rifle when its not working properly.

firstly, like robsmith says, make sure the lever is approx 45* so may need to move it up or down a few degree.

Could also be that the piston inside the gas tube is stuck in the fired position.

not likely cos the gas piston rod extention will protrude thru the back.

secondly, all you got is a stuck gas tube, try this , lever in proper position , turn the rifle upside down , one hand hold the front of the barrel and the other hold the gas tube , lift rifle and let it fall , butt hitting the carpet while still holding the gas tube (pulling it down), try this a few time , you may need to adjust the lever.... good luck .
