I am trying to remove the barrel off my S&W. I don't got the AR block to put it in but I tried to clamp in in the vice after different ways and cant get the barrel to budge. I have been careful not to warp the receiver so I been clamping it by the top rail and the slots that allow the lower to connect. Thing is a pain to remove and no matter how much pressure I put on it I cant get it to budge.

I gave up on striping the A2 gas block aswell. The pins won't move. I was hoping to put on a new handgaurd but this isn't going very smooth lol.

You wouldn't build build a house using a rock for a hammer and an axe for a saw would you?

The proper tools go along way, seek either professional help, or the tools to do the job properly.
Bubbas tools bring bubbas results.

Do you have any pics? Did you remove the barrel nut?

Make sure you are trying to push the gas block pins out the right direction, they are tapered and only come out one way. I took mine off but I can't remember which way they were punched out.

better hit utube and watch some vide get learned up before you end up with some scrap aluminum. most bbl nuts are only 30-60 pds easy to remove

Reminds me of a guy we had on site, used a rock for a hammer. Hammer kept getting used and not put back, the rock was never “borrowed”.

OP, use the proper tools. Or get a smith. Someone on CGN could help you out too I’m sure. My tools are available, you just have to pay the shipping each way. Or ship the upper and parts to me and I can do the work, again you just pay shipping both ways. Finding someone local would be better, as they could teach you what tools to use and how to use them for future builds (there will be more!). Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Cut the a2 sight and block off if you really can't figure it out but if it isn't a norinco it isn't that hard. I've built lots of ar's by holding the barrel in vise with some wood i drilled holes through post up a pic of what you have going on.

Get proper tools. Or ask someone to borrow the tools. Shouldn't be clamping anything to the upper. Unless you want to twist the alum. Then you are stuck buying a new upper. I lent my clam shell block to someone. They didnt have a vise. So he parked his SUV over it.

The pins only go one way. And you need to hit them hard with a slightly bigger punch to break them free. So you can use a smaller punch to punch them out.

I would help you out if you were close sir
Buy the upper receiver clam, receiver insert and get a good armourer’s multi tool wrench.
It can take a bit of force to crack some barrel nuts and that's IF everything is locked down and no wasted energy.
Some guys like to torque the nuts down to max torque or even past 80 lbs though the spline lined up with the gas tube at 45 to 55 lbs....
Then assuming they may or may not have even used antiseize or molybdenum on the threads lol

I bought the magpul bev block, highly recommend it!, those taper pins on the gas block can be a ##### to get moving too, ! Fun project though!
